Nice article Dave, but one thing that I can't work out is why covering the hookbait in pva stops the chats or crayfish?

Christian, it's not PVA mate but non dissolving mesh. The flavour can still come through but the mesh prevents attacks from smaller fish, crays, chats, etc.

sorry, should've made it clearer. its the same stuff as cheap net curtains - go to a haberdashers, or the tackle box in dartford sell it

nope.

the bait swells and the mesh dissapears into it. and could the fish see it anyway?

apart from when your hook gets caught up in it after not having a take in 24hrs......
