I wonder if a kid who "wasn't an enthusiastic student" at school (i.e. thick) but whose father was not friends with the local earl would have the chance to "drift" into a well paid job and receive grants and endorsements from royalty.

I have to say that to me, he sounds like a useless Tom Nice But Dim aristocratic layabout.

People like that certainly upset me.

If Little Lord Fauntleroy-O'Reilly had kept me dangling on a string for 4 years - that's FOUR YEARS - I think I'd have sued the pants off him, ESPECIALLY if I'd signed a CONTRACT! That's what a contract IS...a binding agreement. The previous poster had it right - Tom Not-So-Nice but Dim.
