What's it actually all about? Sometimes I see it and can see why people might disagree. Other times I'm at a complete loss. There seems to be an awful lot of history involved for some folks. Sadly, if you happen to disagree with the wrong person, there's an automatic assumption made, by some, that you are somehow involved in that ancient history and therefore have an axe to grind. It's all a bit "Judean People's Front" as far as I can see.

Pretty much everything I see on the various forums reinforces my natural instinct to avoid the politics of specialist groups and single species membership organizations like the plague. It'll be a shame for those organizations if too many people get to feeling the same way as I do.

Before anyone takes a pop because they feel slighted, I've no particular individual or group in mind. I'll be avoiding them all like the plague.

Actually Sam, this could be the 'barbel free for all' thread we've all been waiting for!

Maybe we should just move it to bait box and only moderate it when we get a complaint thus leaving all other barbel threads free* of kak?

*if only

Yes please. Provided I can have a good whinge about heavy handed moderation and victimization.;):p I'll bet you won't even have the decency to send me a PM to explain why you moved it!:D

I thought it was the Popular Front?

It all gets very "protective" doesn't it?

"Sam" good question, I'm not certain it's anything specific to do with specimen or single species groups per sa, it's down to individuals.
I've been involved over the years with village cricket, football, darts and fishing clubs.
Occasionally this happens, a member takes a dislike to anything different to what they want out of the club. Be that rules or the individuals running it.
They don't all go away and just say, sod it, its not what I want, I'll join another club. One or two and that is usually all it is, go down the village pub and moan and groan about the way their old club is run, when they've already made their choice and left.
Now most of them will do it face to face, but some don't and they go off venting their spleen for years on end to anybody who is in listening distance, potentially damaging their old club, or individuals reputations.

The internet is no different to that village scenario, some individuals have a gripe, and go on the internet and spout about things that occured maybe 5 years ago as if they still exist.
"Longshaw" and "Judas" for instance haven't been members of "my" club for about 5 years. As we all know 5 years in any organisation is a very long time, and things change.
Of course there is always the AGM to raise points, if you have enough fellow members with the same view, things can be changed.
They didn't take that option up.

So, is the choice we make as a current member of any club, to just sit back and let them have their say, or do we try to ensure that any potential new member to our club is given the facts and not the story told by the disaffected?

You all know what I think.

Well all I can say is that I was going to join the BS, but was put off by the constant bickering on FM when anything 'barbel' was mentioned. I can't be specific but j was left with a perception.

I'll take you all on!! I'll OUTFISH ya all!!!

{bursts into tears}

Right that's it! I'm leaving!

Don't try to stop me!

(will that do for a barbel post?)

There is no hassle on the BS forum now that the sorry souls have left.
This, along with BFW and the AFB forum are the only places for them to play now.
I shouldn't let the goings on on here stop you from checking it out.

Funny thing is, most, if not all, of the barbelschmarbel antagonists/protagonists/wronged/righteous that I've either met (very few) or shared pm's with (a few more) they're all dead generous and mainly thoroughly decent blokes!

Fred asked me down to some stretch or other once upon a time, Judas offered to help for somewhere else, some fella who was here many years ago offered me a day on a syndicate stretch after I offered to help his lad out with a bit of coursework, another fella sorted me with some private fishing on the Teme, I could go on, there's loads of decent sorts.

Thing is, there's history between a few and most of them have a point, but they can't all be right all of the time, and at times they don't like to be told that!

I think that you will find that there is no such backbiting or hassle on the ABF forum, in fact its the most friendly site that i know of.

BFW is pretty quiet compared to previous winters.;)
This seems to be the place for the barbel skirmishes these days.

Hang on a mo; what happened to the great traditions of the site?
Where's the embedded snacks threadlet?
Now then: Best supermarket generic snack: for me, Aldi "Melts", a fair imitation of "Skips". Your thoughts?

( Tin hat, exercise book down trousers, pedals frantically away...)

That's because Fred's been banned and Rich jumped before he was pushed. ;)

Funny thing is,

The really funny thing is, 99% of the time the arguments, despite Maceo's brave offering, have absolutely nothing to do with how to go about catching the damn things.

And it seems to me that some of the chief "protagonists" would probably benefit from some of their "opponents" fishing experiences if they shut up and listened occasionally rather than playing "last man standing" on the thread.

If they caught more fish, they might be more inclined to post something relevant on this Fishing Forum?

Just a thought.

I've just had an enforced month off from the internet while I changed provider/service and I must say it was enlightening to come back on, see all the same ol' pointless abuse flying about and wonder whether it was all worth it?

I recommend some of you try a proper voluntary break (without tears, toys and prams). It does wonders for your point of view.

Couldn't agree more Simon. So for the last time and with reference to some of the posts above, lets get this out of the way

The Barbel Society is a Great organisation
It does wonderful work on the Riverine Environment, led by Peter Reading
It supports young Anglers with a number of Junior days attended by excellent Anglers
It also runs a series of Barbel Teach In days around the Country
It has a Number of regular Regional meetings around the Country were all are welcomed.
It has an In-House Magazine, that is well regarded with excellent Editors in the past that have included the late Gordon Scott, Dave Burr, Jon Berry as well as Steve Pope
It runs an Annual Conference/Meeting.
Membership is very reasonable and you will be welcomed by other Barbel Anglers

and get actual fishing debates/views/ideas moving that are not repeatedly hi jacked..
