Reel positioning

I have just returned from Belgium where I was watching the carp anglers on the extensive lakes in the Royal Parks in Trevuren near Brussels. All the well equiped anglers had their rods set out on their pods with the reels on top/over the rod not hanging free underneath. They were set up for drop back bites as well as runs. What are the pros and cons for doing this?

so the rings and the reels were pointing upwards, effectively the rod is upside down on the pod?
How does it stay like that?

And how do they get bites on the bite alarm if the line is on to of the rod? seems a strange thing to do.

Then super glue your bank stick to the underside of the bivy.

Then so you can stike the rod easier you glue you chair to the roof aswell. And tie yourself in.

Obviously.

Nick lets not get silly here!

On a more sensible note, maybe they were using multipliers and somehow rigged up an alarm system.
