Baiting Predicament for Hired Lake

I am visiting a small lake for a week this Autumn which is hired exclusively. The person who owns the lake also owns an up and coming (but still fairly minor) bait company. All the literature about this lake from the owners recommends the use of one of their own baits, becuase that is what the fish are fed on in winter, and I guess because most anglers use it for their week on his recommendation. He would, however, obviously say that to boost profits.

I am not convinced on the quality of the bait recommended. There are some negative comments on a specialist carp site for a start.

So my predicament is this: Do I accept that, regardless of bait quality, this one bait is the one to use because it has gone in all summer and all last year? Or do I take the opposite approach - this lake is quite hard and not too many fish come out - that the fish will now associate that bait with danger. In that case I would take a bait I am comfortable with.

What would you do? I have a week to establish a quality new bait. Or what you hedge bets and take a quantity of both?

Can you sneak some pre baiting of the new bait in?

This would establish the new bait andpre baita few spots for you.

Not a chance, Paul. It is 150 miles away and is constantly hired out.

I personally would be different, particles could be a winner. Tigers could really nail em, don't over do the Tigers though.

I would be foolish to not take the bait that they get fed on, it would be equally as foolish not to take the bait your are confident in.

I think you know the answer anyway.

by all means use the pre bait bait, but also take your best catching bait with you and do you have to use a boilee if you have decent bait rules on the lake then the world is your Oyster

Tricky one.

As your there for a week an option might be to fill it in with your own stuff and see if they come onto it,or maybe use the "recommended" bait as chops and scatter your gear over the top.

Damned if you do,damned if you dont.

On the subject of the picture,it is,erm,a little contraversial, but the blunderer does appear to have the fish in some sort of WWF wrestling hold, very close to floor.Maybe if he was lying on a king size unhooking mat it would be ok.

hedge your bets. Look at the monument, most people who visit there always take a bit of M1 or buy some on site.....

Think Big Riks reply is probably best, take some of your own bait and put a little in of what they are fed

On the assumption that you can buy his bait on site, I'd take only my favourite baits and buy some of his if things do not work out.

If you can only buy his in advance, I would buy some and also take all my favourite baits.

I assume you've tried looking up the place on the net, looking for as much catch report type info as possible?

Thanks for the comments, guys.

With regards to the picture, I am a bit surprised some of you actually think I would lie in an embrace, french kissing a carp which is clearly well over 60lb.

It is, of course, a mocked up, joke picture from another website.

Alan, with reference to your comment on the email to Sally, I decided to F**k it and go alone yesterday as there is no prospect of a refund. Hence this posting.
