Ipicked up from threads elsewhere the fact that Alan Scotthorne had won the world championships for a fifth time, a new record, and further evidence as if it were needed of his dominance at this level. On a patchy venue England ended up 5th behind 4th place Wales, and hot favourites Hungary (at home) failed to capitalise on their first day win to finish 3rd.

Let's offer our heartfelt congratulationson this incredible win by Alan.

Cracking fisherman, cracking individual result for him, its just a shame the team couldn't win, but they are a force to be reckoned with wherever they fish and on any type of water and I supposewe shouldnt expect them to win every year. Well done that man!

And to think that in 1996 I asked him who he was.

Well done Alan.

Well done Alan. Youve done it again and again and again and again.

What a star to come back after a relatively quiet period by his giant standards speaks volumes for his dedication and ability.

So much for the saying "suverners are guveners"

I spoke to him at the NEC a few years ago and a nicer chap would be hard to find. No pretentions or talking down and very helpful and easy to speak to . A top guy.

He'll be BBC sports personality of the year this year no doubt about it - the BBC won't miss this chance to promote angling.

Tally ho
