Canal Carp

I've just found a canal basin that contains about 20 carp, along with tench, roack and bream.
one of the carp was caught in the summer it was a sunning 27lb mirror.but it was foul hooked by a match angler.he says there are 2 even bigger .the basin is full of lillies in the spring whick only leaves about 20ft of fishing space all the way around with a fair bit of boat traffic in the summer months.it is around 3.5ft and is crystal clear in the warmer weather.
The owner of the pub next to it says he feeds them everyday but wont say what it is!!!!!!(w****r!)and he doesnt even fish.i have had them take a few floaters of the surface but thats all.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to catch one of these fish???

Jon, if the fish are used to a human feeding them, all u need do is sit on the bank near to the pub and flick bread/corn/pellets or whatever into the water. the Carp will soon realise its food. Do this at the same day everyday, and it should not be too long before u have them eating out of your hands, literally.

Try and do it when no one is about though...say at dawn..that way other anglers won't nick your spot.

Good luck!!

I'd agree with the above, but to me it sounds like a perfect floater opportunity. A good way to try and select one of the big fellas too. Crust might well be the best bet given that it's by the pub. Bits of sandwichs etc are probably thrown in regularly. On a local canal I fish, a similar area usually produces best on crust rather than mixers.

i was thinking of stalking them under the bank (overgrown) over a bed of groundbait and waiting for the fish to find it and the drop a light float ontop of them.(FOX BARBEL SPECIALIST 1 2/3 LB TEST)
this is because there is not really alt of room to play about with.
is this approach a good idea or should i stick to floating bait?

inresponse to the other messages what baits should i put in and how much?

Sounds good to me...try sweetcorn or bread flake freelined...very visual. I used to use floats when stalking but i found that freelining is better. Hold the line and wait until it tightens before you strike.
I would try prebaiting with hemp and odd hookbait samples.
This approach worked for me on the Lanky canal, only problem was all the GRASS carp kept eating my meat...aren't they suppose to be veggies?

Iain, are the grassies still there?
Jon,if the pads are solid you should be able to spot movement in them watch, observe & get a bait quietly on the nose of the one you want.

if i was u, i wud use bread. it is an all round bait, floating or sinking. i was at a pool once with my 8mtr pole. i had tried maggot but had only caught 4 crucian in 2 hours. i then took a look in my box and saw the bread. i had brought it for wen i cast my rod in at bout 5ish. i thought wat the heck, cant do ne harm. i put a small piece on, enough 2 cover a size 18 hook, and within 10 seconds of puttin' my float in, i had a 1lb 4oz crucian on the hook. wen i nxt went down the canal i tried the bread on my rod. i used the floating teqinque. i had 2 wait bout 30mins b4 i had a bite. sadly the bu**r got away!!
