for starters you will need the lightest, stiffest pole you can afford, preferably one designed for lighter gear, not a carp cruncher. And a good few top kits with elastics ranging from 3's to 6's

A small 'wand' or 'picker' type tip rod is allso well worth having in your bag, for those cold days when its howling down the canal and the odd good fish can save the day

Feed the far margin shelf steadily but don't fish it right away. Feed and fish the near margin and boat channel first. Drip feed all three points throughout the session. Now the temerature is dropping, feed with squatts and fish single pinkie or two squatts on a size 20.

Which canal is it?

Is bloodworm allowed?

Most canals differ vastly from one another these days.Gone are the days when 1 approach is enough.

Some hold a lot of carp, some chub, etc etc.
