I like to fish for most species at one time or another , but I'm pretty fond of buying new kit . Long ago I got to the point where I had too much kit to carry . Sometimes I cut down to the bare essentials......what a pleasure it is to go fly or floater fishing !

But I'm also in the process of building up my gear to the point where I'll have duplicate maybe even triplicates of gear so hopefully I'll just be able to walk in and pick up my pike/river/carp gear etc. without having to swap items from bag to bag.

Do you reckon it is possible to build a tackle selection that covers most eventualities and still be able to carry it ?

I think you can, provided you know what the water produces, what you want from it, and prepare yoursel,f as appropriate

Maybe . I guess that works if you go carp or pike fishing etc. but I like to fish places like the Swale where you can fish for almost anything during a session.

You could leger for barbel or chub , deadbait or spin for pike , maybe float fish for perch or lives . I even know a stretch that has specimen tench . You see it starts to add up . Now you could set out with one species in mind , but if they don't want to feed and something else is active , would you be cursing........

I would opt for a double top barbel rod and a John Wilson Quiver ,a smallish bait runnner and another reel for lighter work,a few traces ,floats ,weights etc.30 inch net and a couple of rod rests one with a buzzer ,jobs a good un.Oh and I forgot the unhooking mat but a smallish one would suffice.

Geoff, the more think about what is possible to catch, the more tackle you willtake with you.

Decide before you go, what you really want to target on the day,and fish for them.

I don't think, worrying about a blank, will aid your concentration.

If you fail, then try again, different bait, different end tackle, this fishing thing isn't instant.

I always find by swopping gear about I forget things, so for years I`ve had complete kits made up,I have my long stay carp set up, my lure set up, my perch and similar specialist set up, and my fly set up in addition to this i also have a stalking set up. Set ups are changed around on occassion, rods reels, etc, but all have a place in my tackle room, on the way out is a seletion of bedchairs and seats etc along with scales and nets to suit the quarry. The carp set up containes 6 rods, 4 matching appropriate to the rods i am using at the time changed occassionally, 1 marker rod and one spod rod in the carp holdall, the perch set up consists of 2 specialist rods and two avons in the specilaist holdall, both set ups have their own rucksack, the lure set up and the fly set up both have shoulder bags and I pick a few rods out of the relivant sections according to my needs on thre day

You might have them Monk but they're brand-new never used. Because to use them you have to go fishing once every Preston Guild /forum/smilies/wink_smiley.gif
