If you like camping with rods out, in a less than inspiring environment, with people you wouldn't socialise with, then it's ideal.

If you like to catch carp, in decent surroundings, without drunkards littering the banks, then there are better places to go.

Hi Vaughan, I'm not familiar with the water you mention, but what I would advise that if Broadlands is in fact a difficult water and you are a newish carper as you state, than try fishing on a water which is smaller and of course less difficult to begin with.
Get to know the fish habits and start work out what makes them tick. Progress this knowledge and then go back to the difficult water.

Also for the record, have you seen the film SHREK? Don’t you think that our very own ‘Carp Angler ’ above is a dead ringer for him? and I don't just mean his attitude!

For anyone else who knows Big Rik, I think you've got to admit there are a few uncanny resemblances, from his wonderful bodily habits through to his stealth like physique!

Yep from now on Rik, I mean SHREK, 'you de big green ogre' in my book! If you don’t know who SHREK is may I suggest you go buy yourself a new dvd!

As no one else seems to have any "hands on" comments, please allow me.
Broadlands was one of our premiere day ticket waters until the unfortunate happening of a couple of years ago. At this moment in time the stockies of 2 years ago are coming out at around 16 to 19 pounds, which considering they went in at 6 to 9 pounds ish( 3 summer fish i think, ask simmo!)isn't bad. There are a few originals still coming out, like Adies Leather and Two sides, both of which i have had and are cracking fish to have in your album. Steve and Gerry run a great lake for any one looking for day ticket action and when you think that in the last year there lake has produced over 2000 doubles including over 140 "20's" that ain't bad.(Carp Talk Issue 392)
I must admit that i was lucky enough to fish it before the "problems" but from what i hear it won't be long before it is back at the forefront of day'ers once again.
This lake serves a purpose and i think to knock it does not help our sport. We know that some waters do not suit all tastes, but to dismiss them out of hand may not be the best advice.
If any one would like more info on Broadlands, E-Mail me direct.
P.S. L.O.L. to you all.

Some of the locals who I wouldn't associate with, visit it on a regular basis.

When all the fish died a couple of years ago (another subject and another soapbox for that one) most of the idiots moved off to pastures new, but the next crop of 'instants' have now moved in.

Come on Dave, to say that 2 car salesmen with no knowledge of fish, who bought the place just to make money a running a great day ticket water is absolutely preposterous.

The numbers of fish reported is also unbelievable.
(Dry paper in the landing net at night and then asking them how many they've had the next morning, whilst still being able to see the dry paper is always a good one)

People fishing to island snags and then being up the hut for coffee, or in another swim many hundreds of yards away is not carp fishing.

If anyone new to the sport wants to fish a water and be influenced by the people aroung them, then Broadlands definitely is not the place.

My Dad told me a story once about a Mag/video star who when asked how many he had caught said "Just the one twenty" but the dry tea bag in his landing net gave him away.(Savay. circa 1982)I was not quoting the bible in my reply, just that for a lot of people broadlands is their best hope for easy'ish carp fishing,if thats what they want!. You must admit that it fills a niche for the type of person who may not have the time to chase fish or have our "unstinting urge to progress the boundarys of uncaught, big water, you cant fish there", carp.
I must agree that i would prefer any angler heading our way would probably be better off going to Ritchie's and getting a decent bit of info on a decent lake but it aint always gonna happen, is it?

Agreed, but if we are encouraging people who are new to carping, what path are we advising them to take?

Are we showing them the way that I, and most others, abhor, or should we show them a way which isn't based around camping, lager and puff?

It's a getting a bit deep and apologies for hi-jacking the thread.

Got to agree with you mate but you know that anyway - Your reference to the paper / tea bag trick made me laugh. I can think of one 'name' who fell foul of that, perhaps he stopped fishing there because things got a bit sticky...last I heard he had helped out with a Wintons stocking..

Many thanks for "all" of the reply's though we seem to have lost track of the origanal question and put the world to rights about the ethics of carp fishing. So back to Broadlands or would you care to offer another day ticket water that would enable me to catch, preferably around the Southampton/portsmouth areas(I only live here and do not support either teams :) )

Can't think of any day ticket places off the top of my head that would give you similar results as Broadlands (i.e plenty of fish and not a puddle). But one of our local clubs (1/2 hour from central Southampton) has a couple of beautiful lakes that are virtually unfished during the season and offer exellent fishing in stunning surroundings, few restrictions and very few anglers. Plenty of fish to upper twenties. I'll not disclose all the details here but if you would like some more information please feel free to mail me offline at:

Rob and I are both in 'that' club, there are also a few other clubs/waters around.
Drop either of us a mail, if you want some decent, quiet fishing.

Vaughan.
You can fish:-
Somerley Lakes
Sway Lakes
Hatchet Pond
Turfcroft Farm
Longbridge
..............The List is endless around here. I would reccommend Pallington Lakes a bit further on than Broadlands but it worth it not to sit amongst other peoples urine ans feaces!

Cheers lads I've started doing some groundwork on these and will hopefully thin it down to a few.
The Club idea sounds good, however, I spend most of my time working (Sad)and can be away in different parts of the country. Still as Rob said its the same as a week at Broadlands so will probably go for that, if they will have me ?
I see there is a full page on Boadlands in Angling Times this week the chap who wrote the article blanked :)
Cheers again
