New Ribble Record

Double congratulations are in order this week I think. Firstly to Mark Halstead for a superb 13lb-10oz barbel from the river Ribble - a new venue record.

Secondly how about AT ? Everyone’s quick to attack the weeklies when they award prizes to the same big fish like the Great Ouse barbel and the Lynch Hill roach, but how about a pat on the back when they get it right. I was pleased to see The Angling Times has given Mark a Drennan award for the capture of his fish, so it’s nice to know that the geography of the capture has played a significant part in the awarding of a prize.

Let’s hope we see a lot more of this…..

Hi Gary,

This has been the whole point of a campaign that has been waged for a few years now, and the penny might just be beginning to drop, let's hope so. Mind you the vilification I have received from some quarters still leaves a nasty taste.

Giving the right acclaim to Mark's fish must surely be in the best interests of not only angling in general but the paper themselves.

So I second your congratulations and lets hope we see more of this in the future, because it has to be right for specialist angling no matter which species we are talking about.

Cheers,

Steve.

Andy / Steve,

Cheers guys - I think there has been a general acceptance of the importance of geographical location for some time now amongst anglers themselves. I think your right though Steve, any body that awards prizes for significant captures and the paper that it represents will undoubtedly gain a lot of credibility for those awards.

You never know, they may even start taking into acount whether the angler is a 'full time' one or if he is the kind of guy who actually has a life as well ! !

Gary,
cracking fish for a ribble devotee.
I've never been able to work out how all the specimens have been logged on the river , given that control is in the hands of many clubs.
