Severe flood warnings were today in place in Gloucestershire as the swollen
River Severn swamped low-lying land.<
Upstream Worcestershire and Upton-on-Severn have already suffered the effects
of the highest water levels in more than 50 years.<
The Severn was expected to peak in Tewkesbury early tomorrow with the threat
of floods hanging over the area.<
Already low-lying land in the town such as the Vineyards beauty spot near
Tewkesbury Abbey has been swamped.<
The river had swollen by almost 20mm (almost an inch) in two hours earlier
today to nearly 4.5 metres high. It was expected to rise another 20mm before
nightfall.<
Flood warnings were also in place in Gloucester. The river in the city area
has been rising slowly and is expected to peak over the weekend.<
An Environment Agency spokeswoman said: ``The severe flood warning is in place
for the river from Bewdley to north of Gloucester.<
``Flooding is imminent and residents should put plans in action now.
Tewkesbury could be flooded tonight or tomorrow.''<
