I have a 12 - 20lb Ugly Stik boat rod but have been told it will be undergunned for cod and i need a 30lb class rod. Can anyone give an opinion on whether I need to shell out my hard earned cash on a 30lb rod or will my 12-20lb rod cope?

It would depend on where you are fishing and the conditions and style. For pirking or deep water and heavy tides it will possibly be too light.

I've not fished this area but I would say that you would be better off with a heavier set up for pirking, if you are bait fishing you will probably be OK. Maybe there is someone on here who fishes this area and would know better.
