Drennan Micro Braid

I got some of the Drennan Micro Braid,
(10lb B.S.) but every rig I've tied using the knotless with it, it looks fine, it palm tests fine, I then try it
and find that I'm losing fish, after the retrieve, the hair has wrapped around the hook shank several times.
I tried hooks from 10's to 6's and the same thing happens.
Anyone got or had the same problem?

What hook pattern are you using?

Where the Drennan braid is so thin, it can slip behind the closure point of the eye.

Are you starting the looping on the opposite side of the join?

Are you glueing the knot before use?

Hi Rik,
I'm using Top Rods and tried Drennan Specialist but same thing happened.
I tried gluing and not glueing and yep,
I make sure the loop starts on the opposite side of the join.

Drennan Specialist have got to be the worst shape ever for hair rigs.
I've never heard of Top Rods unless these are from Nash?

Unless the rigs is slipping under pressure, then I'm not certain as to why it is happening.
If you still get these losses and the hair wrap after you've glued it, then I really have no answer.
Do you get the same problem with other braids or mono?

Rik...strange how you dont like the Drennen Specialists...I love them...and so does Andy Little..lol

Thats what I love about fishing, the different oppinions.

Hey Rob,
Talking of opinions, I personally don't like
Drennan hooks either, I have numerous ones
snap at the bend, but it was all the shop had!!.
Rik,
no - don't get the problem at all, it
seems unique to Drennan. I don't really have much confidence in any of they're stuff as I've also had mainline part for no reason, that lot got stripped from my reels and binned, but I think the shop did me selling push for they're gear, Typically I fell for it with the proverbial hook line and sinker!! :-(

Amazing contrast in oppinions here. I love the Drennan hooks and have found them very reliable, I have personaly exracted carp to 33lb from snags using a size 8 Drennan super specialist. Austin can I have a stab in the dark here, are you using fairly long hairs, by that I am talking long enough for the bait to hang down below the bend of the hook?

The hooks themselves are superb for all manner of baits and situations, I just don't believe their shape lends itself well to hair rigs.

Austin, if you feel the need to stick with the knotless knot, then try shrink tube. Push a piece of about 1.5cm (depending on hook size) down your line onto the hook itself until you just cover the eye of the hook and far enough down to lock in your hair (about opposite the tip), hold over a steaming kettle until all shrinks into place. This will stop your hair from wrapping. I personally use 10lb silk braid (for a natural bounce presentation) glued to the hook as a hair and then a 15lb braid hook length tied on using a grinner. I then shrink my tube (as stated above) and cut off at a 45 degree angle. Where the rubber tubing covers the eye, the knot and part of the hook it causes less harm to the mouth of the carp. This method may seem bulky in explanation, but it certainly isn’t the case in real life. If you want more info on this rig, then give me a shout offline and I’ll get my crayon set out for diagrams.

Thanks Gents,
1st.
Andrew..I've tried long and short but still get the problem, I thought that it was due to the diameter of the braid as I have never seen any braid so thin. I even tried a rig I saw once in a mag called "The confidence rig" where the bait was tight up against the hook, but the bait still ended up in front of my hook.
2nd.
Thanks Stuart I'll be intouch soon.
Cheers

Its amazing really how different anglers have different views..and long may it continue. If everyone thought the same, then new ideas would never happen.

I use the Drennans with "proper" hairs ala Maddocks. 2 inches of 2 pound line off the bend. I have not tried them with a knotless hair. Another way is to add a tiny loop opposite the point and attach the hair to this...again..a long hair.

How many people actually use a long hair these days out of interest?

Dear Austin.
Here's a few suggestions to cure your boilie spinning blues.....
1. Use 10lb Kryston Merlin.
2. Use a Carp R Us Nailer size 6
3. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS USE A LINE ALIGNER
4. Put your hook and bait in a Korda Funnel Web bag.
