What line from harbour wall or beach for carp rods?

Hi
Im going to do abit of fishing from the beach or possibly a harbour wall/pier etc using my carp gear. I have 2.75lb test curve rods and 12lb line on at the minute. I have spools spare so was looking at getting some more suitable line. The question is, what is suitable line?
I have looked on numerous websites and found lots of different answers.

I would be happy to use 15lb b/s with a tapered shock leader. With a carp rod you will be limited to the size of weight you can reasonably cast without risking having the rod break.

Is the shock leader an essential part of the rig though? or can i just use an ordinary simple running lead rig straight on the mainline?

Fishing from a harbour wall or the end of a pier you don't have to cast just drop your rig straight down.
