I am now 16 and staying on to do my 'A levels' in my schools 6 form doing philosopy, phycology and ICT after that I want to do a course in Fishery studies. Has anyone done one if so where at and what did you think of it! The other problam for me is that the nearest that I know of is brooksby which is 2 and a half hours drive away.
I live in the North East Near Teeside and its a long way away, does anyone know of any locally? However if I have to I will go down there for a few years!

That said, you might want to check what A levels are needed as entry requirementfor the course, I'd have though Biology would have been required..

I would have thought that a "lab" science A level would be an absolute minimum, biology preferably with chemistry at a pinch. Popular courses like fisheries management can pick and choose students so make sure you fit the requirements exactly.

Even if they take you on you will struggle without a basic grounding in biology. I did maths when it was a very unpopular subject and those who were taken on with A levels other than maths all dropped out by the end of the 2nd year.

You can always ring the university and ask.

Phone up Rodbaston College, Penkridge, Staffordshire they do allsorts and the courses they do you can start now, not sure how they equate to A levels though, and, its a residential college with nice accomodation!
Also try Sparsholt College in Hampshire and I think Brooksby College in Leicestershire!

You need to get hold of a UCAS book for all the Universities in the UK.
In there it'll tell you what courses are running at what Unis.

Perhaps you also want to be thinking about studying Ecology at Uni. level.
Lancaster run an Ecology course.

Countryside Management, Environmental Biology, Conservation Biology, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Zoology are also worth thinking about, as other options as they all give you the opportunity to specialise in your final year in a fisheries field.

Subject areas that you will need are
Maths
English
Biology
Physical Geography and or Earth Systems would be a big help.

Ideally straight A's will get you in anywhere
Straight B's will get in most place. Perhaps not Oxford, Cambridge, Durham.

Minimum you'll need are 2 B's and C.

All's not lost if you don't attain these grades, just puts it on hold until either you attain the grades by resits, or you are over 21 and you can apply to enter as a mature student. As a mature student it's easier to get into university as your life experience is taken into account and/or you could do an access course.

Whichever way you go, it'll be the second year before you start to specialise as your first year is a foundation year.

Hope this helps you.

P.S. be warned Michael, you are entering a field that is maths oriented! So they really need to be on the ball!

If you don't get in first time and decide to get a job for a year look at the Open University as they have some neat Environmental Science courses. I'm thinking of doing one after I've gone through all the Classical Studies and Art History courses - about 2015 give or take a year!

When you call Rodbaston College - ask for Pete Bryan, he's the fisheries management head guy and also runs their fishery/breeding centre.

I took my NFA coaching qualification there - great place and also there's some suberb fishing in Staffordshire !!!
