Hi all, I'm new here and new to fishing. Me and my son (7) are going to take it up so we can spend some quality time together and hopefully catch some nice fish.
We are in the Tewkeabury, glos area and visited hill view lakes which was great :)

Welcome Tony.

I used to fish the river in Tewksbury which was pretty good. Used to park by a bridge over the river just on the way out of town (can't remember the name of the road unfortunately) and walk down.

It belongs to Tewksbury Angling Club and as I remember their subs are very reasonable and even better for kids - might be worth giving it a go.

Thanks guys, feel very welcome here now :) ill give the river a go when we are a bit more savvy but thanks for the advice.

I'm borrowing tackle from my father in law at the moment who goes fishing now and then. Want to buy me and my son the basics soon and was wondering if you guys could point us in the right direction about what to look out for and what to avoid. Can't afford much tbh but don't want to end up paying twice as much in the long run if you get what I mean.
We enjoy float fishing rather than ledgering, caught 5 carp Friday afternoon (about 2-3 pounders I guess) using float and sweet corn, any tips on rigs etc would really help.

Looking forward to hearing your replies :)

Tony, i agree with you, leave the river alone for a while and just enjoy catching fish, the river(s) in Tewks could be hard going for newcommers, but very rewarding later.

There are some great float rods with a bit of beef on the market nowadays, these can land small fish and the occasional lunker.

The time you spend with your lad will be so special, i'm 57 and i still remember fishing with my Dad when i was 4 or 5..........go make memories mate.

Thanks Berty, I remember being out with my dad in his lorry at that age lol really hoping its not a 5 min wonder for my son as I feel it's quality time with him away for the distractions of life.
Looking at some Argos fishing kits but never heard of the makes so bit weary tbh but for 2 rods/ reels - net and some bits and bobs for £99 might be worth a try??

Think I'll go down to my local tackle shop and see if they can put something together for me. Quick question do I/we need some sort of fishing licence? Only fishing on lakes for now (day tickets)

Welcome to FishingMagic Tony

have a look at Shakespeare - they do decent rods and reels at bottom end prices - Mach 3 is their top end - Mach 1 or 2 would be a good start to look at

They are doing Mach1 rod and reel deals (with line) for abbout £35 a set, if their tackle is as good as many are now saying the could be a bargain, here's an example:
Shakespeare MACH1 XT Specialist Rod Reel Deal

Alternatively, have a look at "Go Outdoors" there's one in Gloucester and some of their clearance gear is at a good price:

Shimano Forcemaster Mini Float Rod, 10ft | GO Outdoors
Shimano Catana 2500 RB Match Reel | GO Outdoors

Be aware the reel is red, not as shown.
