The problem with sea fish stocks isn't over fishing but the E.U quota's.
Millions of pounds worth of fish are thrown back dead for the benefit of Crabs and Starfish.
The public needs to learn to be more adventurous in it's choice of fish, my local chippy has only ever had Cod, Haddock or Plaice.
I have asked if they could get some Mackerel but they said nobody would buy it.
My local Chinese (they invented Carp) say they can get River Cobbler(Thai Catfish), (almost 6,000 air miles), WTF.

While this is a good idea in theory and would probably improve our stock levels of fish greatly, where is enough fish to satisfy the majority of Europe going to come from, and won't those fisheries then suffer in the same way as ours have as a consequence of overfishing?

Nef is naff!
A ban on trawling will never happen, it supports too big an industry affecting thousands of peoples livelihoods.
How on earth can such a huge investment compensating trawlermen by not fishing now provide a profit in the future if when such ban is lifted the stocks are over fished again?

I think like many on here who have signed up to Hugh Fernley's "fish fight" against the catch limit quota where half of fish stocks are thrown back dead, it has captured our attentions and highlighted the scale of the problem such that we may yet change Brussels mind but its a ridiculously long uphill battle.

Given a choice I would propose either weighted long lining or a time limit ban whereby each licensed trawler has set time at sea irrespective of fish species caught/bycatch/quotas.
Everything trawled up is kept aboard processed and sold using netting and systems that are kind and sustainable.

It will never happen until it's too late. Then the Trawlers will be the 1st to moan about losing their jobs.

we all know that it aint gonna get better, its the same old profit before sustainability

'ere's a crazy thought for ya, when we've screwed up the land to feed ourselves, and start getting hungry, will we look at the oceans/seas and wonder why something that was so full of life, yet required no input from man, is now ruined

will we only question the stupidity of ruining what could be a fail safe source of food, when the food we try to grow on land aint working

you might wanna check out what mitsibushi are doing to the tuna, deliberately driving it to extinction while at the same time hoarding it in their freezers for the inevitable price hikes that follow scarcity

Well we have all but driven the north sea cod into extinction with our over fishing. And a 5 year ban is not long enough. More like 10 years would be better. The problem of course is that there are simply too many humans on this planet for it's natural resources to sustain. Wait what will happen when Africa. Asia and Australia hit drought status. El Nino has started to swing so that Australia and New Zealand will not be able to export food as they are doing at present.

Where do you think the bulk of Australia and New Zealand's food goes to?

That's right - China, a country that cannot feed itself, and it will only get worse as vast areas of land are cleared of farming to make way for factories and dwellings.

But water will be the worst.

And this country cannot supply all it's food requirements. And some time after WW2, there was a period when it did.
