It has to be PowerPro.
I could sing lots of praises about it, but suffice to say that anyone who has used Fireline and then tried PowerPro has changed over to it.

Either mail Rob Thompsom who posts on here

Andy - if you would like a sample to look at before you buy any I'll be happy to send some different B/S and Dia. Or if you would like a chat about it call me one the number above.

The response from Carpers has been fantastic to say the least - PowerPro is very different to the braids that have been available and have had Carpers running scared - over the last couple of months we have also had a great deal of interest from Barbel anglers - so far so good, no complaints and plenty of decent fish caught.

Rob, I've only ever used nylon, never had any nightmares as such but have been curious of late. Would you recommend a change and for what reasons?

I am not going to go into some sales pitch - I cannot recommend that you change from mono to braid because it will catch you more fish, it has advantages over mono in my eyes but in others these may not be seen as advantages. I will use an example here with regards to casting.

My mate has used PP for the last year, he fishes some big pits and one of the going spots is over 130yds - he can consistently cast past this with 0.28mm (equ 12lb mono)braid using the same rod and reel with 0.20mm mono and a shock leader he can barely reach it. The lack of stretch puts your rod into full compresion far quicker than mono and the nature of the braid causes less friction.

It is a massive shock when you hook your first fish on Braid - a lot of anglers I know have tried it basically shat themselves and gone straight back to mono.

I had used braid long before it went on my carp reels and having used wire for years in the sea I was well aware of the differences (i.e lack of stretch).

The fight is unbelievable with every twist turn and pluck transmitted through the line and rod to you - heart stopping would be a good description.

With other fish such as tench you tend to get far earlier indication, again due to complete lack of stretch as soon as something moves the lead it is transmitted up the line. I fish slack lines with no problems, tight lines with no problems other than the occasional wind bleep. If you balance you set up and indicators correctly you'll practically eliminate this also.

With soft or through action rods (such as your new ones) Braid will not seem as severe you will get a far better hook hold and you will be able cast further. I have also found that it works superbly in conjunction with barbless hooks the hook is pulled home better and due to the lack of stretch there is little opportunity for the fish to get any slack and in turn throw the hook.

As I said at the beginning of this post there are all sorts of arguments for and against - it is down to personal preference why not give it a go and see how you get on.

Rob, thanks for this, and I will give it a go. I understand you see a lot of Rik, who I'm doing a three day session with on April 1st. Could you recommend and give a bulk spool to Rik and I'll settle up with him.

As they say, a recommendation, is better than a salesman. I’ll give it a go to settle my curiosity. I normally use 14lb Daiwa Infinity Duo Specialist Mono, so your advice would be much appreciated in matching my criteria.

No problem there mate - I have a 1500yd bulk spool of 0.28 sat on me desk! This is by far and away the most popular size for carping and I'm sure it will do you proud.

All the best
