Having just read the excellent article "Then and Now" and currently helping a friend get back into angling I was wondering what members consider to be the best - course angling methods - type book currently in print. I might just get him a copy for Christmas!

You say you are trying to get him back into angling so I assume he has fished before at some point and therefore knows the basics already. The more general books, because they are trying to be cover everything, only get a chance to go over the basics which is great for a complete beginner but not so much use to someone who has done a bit of fishing already.

If it were me I'd try to find something a little more specialist in it's subject that goes into a little greater detail. What type of fishing do you think he'll be doing mostly?

Thanks for the responses. Re what sort of fishing well at the moment it is pretty general bream and roach in still waters (pits) and one of the local big rivers (Maas). He has done a bit of float fishing but is new to feeder fishing. I am hoping to get him into fishing with me on the Waal after the barbel there but he is not geared up for that yet. Hope to take him lure fishing for pike next week. So all in all pretty general and fairly basic - even down to the knots so perhaps the John Wilson book would be appropriate.

The fox book of pike fishing-lure/bait fishing is one I would recommend to beginners!
A very good read and cheap at about a tenner!

How about a few fishing DVDs? you can usually find them at around a fiver.
Take a look on the gifts4anglers website, they specialize in books, DVD and gifts for anglers and have hundreds of books to purchase.

Archie Braddocks fantastic feeder fishing? Don't know if I would buy it as a present, but Billy Lanes encyclopedia of float fishing is as current and relavent today as the the moment it was printed IMO.

Very true one of the books that is timeless two other good books are Ivan Marks on Match Fishing and Float Fishing with Ivan Marks.

How about a subscription to Angling times? It has articles and news from most branches of the sport and is full of adverts for all the latest must have bits an pieces. Mine costs me £1 per week delivered to the door.

I read it then use it to line the bottom of the guinea pig hutch. Sometimes I don't get round to reading it and just use it for the pigs, but for half the price of a Costa flat white a week it has to be a bargain.

I'd take a look at the Angling Times Library series of books. Good basic guides to all the major coarse species. Of course there are more advanced books for each species but these are really nice introductions.

The Angling Times Library | Collectable series of angling books | All Fishing Books | Coch-y-Bonddu Books | COCH-Y-BONDDU BOOKS LTD

As for knots the Lefty Kreh book is good. Comes with a DVD too.

FISHING KNOTS PROVEN TO WORK FOR LIGHT TACKLE AND FLY FISHING. | All Fishing Books | Coch-y-Bonddu Books | COCH-Y-BONDDU BOOKS LTD

Angling times to line the Guinea pig hutch? most folk just use it as bog paper, even that's to good for it :D

Many thanks for all the suggestions - it has also helped fill my Christmas wish list. Whatever the quality of AT, not an option I'm afraid as I live in the Netherlands. (Btw anyone who might be reading this and lives near Nijmegen do please let me know - in need of more local knowledge.)

Just to say hi, my first post:eek:

I think Angling times has got a lot better recently with articles that you can actually read. Not all just Carp stuff either.

cheers
