Anyone else own this rod? If so, what are the heaviest lines and leads you've used with confidence? I just recently ordered one, but can't find any detailed specs on line rating and casting weight.

Cheers.

Chapmans who sell them will tell you max line 12lb and ok to cast 3 to 4oz up the inside on a flooded river.

Thanks for the reply (again!)...I've contacted Sonik directly, so hopefully they'll be able to give me some accurate information.

Any idea what the consequence of using heavier line than the rod is rated for, is? I've been fishing for years, but never figured that out!

The planet will implode, unless you are using braid of course.

Hello, in my opinion, using braid is really interesting if you're targeting fish far away from the river banks, from 40 meters away and more. The bites will be unmissable. But it could also be a real pain with nervous fish like barbels and/or when you fish closer swims because of its lack of stretch. In that case, you'll lose gear and fish.
For the Sonik rod, I guess a 12lbs line will be fine.

Cool, thanks for the info.

So, are you suggesting that you could go higher than the rod rating if you use braid, Chris?

Any 2lb TC rod should be fine with lines up to about 15lb. There's nothing to stop you using a higher breaking strain than than that, but there's little point in doing it.

When using braid it is usual to go a bit higher on the breaking strain than with mono. A mate of mine who is a very experienced barbel fisher uses 20lb braid. He claims this gives him the advantage of a low diameter line and the extra strength if he needs it.

Personally I wouldn't use braid for barbel fishing because I can't see any real advantage in doing so.
