By 'they' I assume that you mean the people in charge.

If the people in charge found out that you had obtained such information then you would most likely do a pretty rapid disappearing act before the info got any further.

Hard pellets are produced with a hammer mill, soft ones are extruded/moulded or pressed into shapes.

Soft ones can also be dehydrated to produce hard pellets and hard pellets can be soaked to produce soft pellets :D

"Modern fish feeds are made by grinding and mixing together ingredients such as fishmeal, vegetable proteins and binding agents such as wheat. Water is added and the resulting paste is extruded through holes in a metal plate. The diameter of the holes sets the diameter of the pellets, which can range from less than a millimetre to over a centimetre. As the feed is extruded it is cut to form pellets of the required length. The pellets are dried and oils are added. Adjusting parameters such as temperature and pressure enables the manufacturers to make pellets that suit different fish farming methods, for example feeds that float or sink slowly and feeds suited to recirculation systems. The dry feed pellets are stable for relatively long periods, for convenient storage and distribution. Feeds are delivered in bulk, in large bags—usually one tonne, or in 25 kilogram bags. Smaller quantities of specialist feeds are supplied for use in fish hatcheries."

Ah, but in the absence of any Oompa Loompas with cordless drills, how are pre-drilled pellets made??

Yeah drawings would be good. Make your invoice out to Fishing Magic.... You'd be cheap at twice the price.

This is basic porthole die construction - substitute base mix for Aluminium and add a 'pelletiser' a different diameter die for each pellet size..[ame=http://youtu.be/PT_mqlZwmXs]Porthole die extrusion of Aluminium in Manufacturing - YouTube[/ame]

:D:D I knew someone would pick that up, as soon as I done did it I was asking meself who is 'they'? :eek:mg:

I have tried letting paste 'set' myself but after 4 days although tough it was squidgy to the touch and nothing like a proper pellet.

How long do 'they' wait for the pellets to go hard?

EDIT
What time is it? Its says I did this post at 09:21 but its 16:23?

Bit like getting toothpaste out of a tube then?
The one which had me puzzled for years was how they got the stripes in the toothpaste, I'd cut the empty tube up which never helped at all to find the secret you have to sacrifice a full one, fortunately these days someone has done it for you.

Hmm...you may need to refer to 'them' for this one. They might not be too happy about giving out trader secrets.

er...I think they cook them.

Almost correct; when the meal is compressed through the die it generates heat, so once the pellet is formed it's then cooled.

Here's a question with a scary answer:
How many pounds of fish does it make to make a pound of trout pellets?
