Folks I'm off to the US for 2 weeks later this year, what, if anything, fishing related is cheaper in the US and worth bringing back?

I'll second that. Phenominally cheap when we went to Canada, but I wasn't allowed to bring back everything I wanted.

As one who has been arond the world a few times, I think the biggest problem with the UK fishing takle market is that is is too specialised. Nowhere else in the world do we have rods for so many specific application. Most American use two or three rod types. I have personally 15 rods and several types of reels.

Then there is the size of the market. 20 million + anglers in US compared with 1 million here. And there are too many pigs at the trough in UK.

By that I mean there are too many "middle men".

In South Africa the main importer was bringing in tackle ex-factory, mainly from the far east.

Matters are no better when an individual tries to import goods into this country. The initial purchase will be, without doubt, far cheaper. but, add to this various import duties - very few get away with not being slapped with them - plus post and packing then, on top of that lot, the uncertainty where warranties are concerned... Well, you can see it starts to get expensive. In fact in some cases you could end up paying more than you would over here. We just can't win. Unless you know somebody visiting the US, Canada, SA or Australia.

About 10 years ago, Mia Sports who are the largest importers of fishing tackle in SA took delivery of a job lot of "Andy Little" carp rods from a far east manufacturer. They all had SIC guides and Fuji Fittings and were 12ft with 2.5 to 23/4 test curves.

Price: ?11.50 each!!!!

100 m spool of Maxima from Mias: ?0.95 in 1999.

Shimano Stradic GTM 4000 at Mias in 1999: ?28.00!!!

Eat your hearts out chaps

Birds Nest,

The things to look out for are reels, line, hooks, leads and if your into lure fishing then you'll be spoilt for choice, Rapalas are about half the price we pay for them and the range is enormous.
If you want to bring back some sea rods check out the Uglystick range. In the U.S. they virtually give them away and they're bloody good rods. Practically every fisherman I've met on the Keys uses the lighter models especially the the lure rods.
If your looking for heavier sea rods then how about Shimano Beastmasters, complete with roller guides. A 30lb class will set you back all of $59
As far as reels are concerned you can buy almost all makes and model sold here but at only a fraction of the price.
You didn't say where you are going in the U.S. but wherever it is I think I can assure you that you'll have a great time.
Like the guys on this site American anglers are great.

Oh I didn't think you'd be able to get much in the way of Rear Drag reels over there. I thought the trend was for front drags...

I am waiting for wal-Mart to start opening similar stores to the US ones. In case you were not aware Wal-Mart took over Asda in this country. The relevance? Wal-Mart sell fishing tackle, top brands like Shimano, Penn etc and at greatly reduced prices. I hope it happens over here.

My wife is from the states and when she moved over here 4 years ago she brought me her (deceased) fathers fishing kit. Most of it is of little use to me but two of the baitcasting reels look brand new and the price stickers on the boxes says $4.95!

Also in the states I can get a take away T-bone steak and chips for less than a burger and chips in the UK!
