It's very hard to second guess. However, I'd suggest that it'll be something that didn't sell in huge numbers. That will be either down to fashion and/or excellence at a relatively high price point for the time.

I'd doubt that the Preston rods will be obscure enough, or quite excellent enough to make it (not that I'm suggesting that they aren't good).

Given that relatively modern 90s/early 2000 rods such as Fox Kevlar Barbel/Specialists, Daiwa Powermesh Specialist Barbel, Normark Titans and Daiwa Amorphous Kevin Nash carp rods are already showing signs of cult followings and increasing values, I'd suggest things in a similar vein will be the ones to look out for.

I've got a sneaking suspicion that something daft like the relatively recent Fox 15' Barbel Xtreme is a likely candidate for the cult following. Not particularly due to outright excellence or high price, simply because it's a relatively obscure niche product.

No mention of H's there Sam;) From personal experience for trotting the Titan 2000 I bought in '99 takes some beating, My Preston carbonactive (c2000) is very flexible and will take small roach to 20's carp without too much sweat. I'd go for the Titan 2000 as the best in it's class that I own but would put in a shout for the Harrison Specialist and the Balista Slim.

As a cyclist I only use travel rods, so the only travel rod that I would call iconic
is the John Wilson Avon Quiver.
I don't think I've heard a bad word against it {versatile, light, reliable and affordable).

I owned one of those 15 footers, worst thing I ever bought, the handle was too short and it was tip heavy, if that was not bad enough the middle 5 foot was one big flat spot. It still made one and a half times what I paid for it though.
My candidate for iconic status would be the Harrison Chimera 3.

I'd go for the original Porky Pig with push in tip. Had to change sliding reel seat for a fixed one but a lovely rod to play fish of all sizes on.

Simply because, by their very nature, they are cultish as soon as they are custom made.

The praise for the John Wilson Avons may not be as unanimous as you think.;):D

I think it is a very hard thing to predict it all depends on your age as to what is iconic sportex rods have been iconic for forty years or more to the older generation are are sought after and very expensive. in the seventies the Apollo Taperflash was iconic but it is not these days indeed the mark 4 and many of the cane rods from the fifties and the sixties are still iconic but that is mainly because they are cane the the same models made in glass are not nearly so sought after.

I would agree with the Taperflash being an iconic rod, and add to the split cane rods the Wallis Wizard and the Super Wizard too.

I'd also add the Carbotec F.A.S.T. rods as well, not only due to their exceptional price tags but because they were the first commercially available 'carbonactive' rods' that didn't lock-up when playing a fish.

I guess it is difficult to differentiate between iconic and cult though.

Certainly rods like the carbon active and the more expensive rod seem to pass the test of time. Good rods do not become bad rods just because they are old they may not be as efficent as some of the more modern rods but they are still great rods. I think these days Diawa and Preston are the top two best bets for the future and shimano across the spectrum of match and specialist. There are so many good products on the market these days you are spoilt for choice and price is not the guide it was, as bad rods are a rarity these days even in the budget ranges.

It's the Tommy Pickering Daiwa Connoisseur Z float rods for me, both the waggler and the spliced tip versions. Mind you, some may not call them modern given their age.

Peter, for something very different did you know that B James & son also made a Kennet Perfection fly rod?

No, I didn't know that Jerry, but I'll have a good search of some of my old catalogues now to see.

I do love cane fly rods but not to use for a whole day to be honest, but for an afternoon they can be grand

Iconic modern rods?

Shimano Technium Specialist, Drennan Tench Floats, Drennan Big Feeder and IM8 Superfeeder, John Wilson Avon Quiver and loads more I can't remember.

Iconic they may be but its still doesn't mean they are good rods. Everybody has their own ideas on what constitutes a good rod.

That is the reason we keep on buying new rods always looking for something better the only thing is with myself I still use my old favourites most the time I usually buy rods to do a particular job on a particular venue.

It may not be the cool thing to do, but I would put a vote in for the original JW Avon.

Even more modern offerings that I think deserve the title would be the Century Autoclave NGs.

My dislike of them has nothing whatsoever to do with being "cool". I can well accept that they are indeed an iconic rod. My problem with them is that I have no idea why that is the case. I just don't think they are very good.

I think the reason that they caught on was they were reasonably priced and there were not that many comparable rods on the market when they first came out and a lot of anglers bought them JW had a very big following back then and anglers caught fish using them and they sold like hot cakes.
