This is mine:

"It cannot be said too often - fishing is worth just the pleasure it gives"

Bernard Venables, "A Prospect Of Angling"

If I ever find myself taking fishing too seriously, reading this brings it all back into perspective.

We ask a simple question
And that is all we wish:
Are fishermen all liars?
Or do only liars fish?

WILLIAM CAIN: from Fish, Fishing and Fisherman [1927]
Is it a lie that fishermen lie.
A lie is a statement made with intent to deceive No fisherman makes such statements. For since every fisherman to whom another fisherman asserts that, on such a day in such a place, he slew so many trouts or barbels or whitebaits, weighing so much - since every such fisherman automatically divides number and weight number and weight by three halves that and knocks off ninety per cent from the quotient [or whatever it is], he I mean the first fisherman - when in his turn he tells the story of the same sort to yet another, a third fisherman, confidentily expects that the third fisherman to treat his [the first's] in the same fashion. Now such a man may not justly be accused of lying. He does no more than follow a well-recognised and convenient custom.

'The efficient roach angler need never suffer from an inferiority complex, no matter what branch of fishing he may eventually take up.
My honest opinion is that salmon and trout fishing are simple by comparison'.

The appeal of Angling is the continual anticipation of catching something elusive yet obtainable.

...some non angler I believe attempting to quantify why we go fishing.

You missed a bit Phillip....

The appeal of Angling is the continual anticipation of catching something elusive yet obtainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.

Yes your right....in essance it boils down to a continual sense that something COULD happen at any second & thus a never ending cycle of hope.
