How much tackle does everyone lose or break?

Ok, serious question

Everytime, i go fishing i lose something. Whether its my fault, the fishes fault, the wildlifes fault, the trees fault, the weathers fault or whoever, i seem to lose so much kit its unbelievable.

Getting snagged on things like trees and weed is part and parcel of fishing but when i think how many times its happened i must be verging on hundreds of pounds worth of end tackle.

Think about it, everytime your broke off, thats a fair few quid down the drain in trace, lures, floats, shot, leadcore, putty, hooklink, hooks etc. this is easily once an outing.

Ive snapped rods getting stray casts out of trees (twice)
left countless banksticks
Cast spods into next week
Kicked tackle boxes in to the water at 4am running to bites
Trapped rod tips in the boot of the car
Forgot to put the baitrunner on (we know how that ends)

Am i the only one?

I constantly loose forceps....... Though saying that.. I recently drove off with all my tackle by the side of the van (distracted by a phone call) - had a frantic drive back and fortunately it was still there!

I now buy disgorgers in bulk as I drop them so much , and hate having them around me neck !

why dont they make floating versions !

recently fished at manor farm and a guy packed up next to and drove off with out his umbrella , came back about three hours later!

I thought I was getting bad at being absent minded untill reading the above posts I work to system something like a flight check before taking off. So many bags and so many items in the bag as for forceps put them on a zinger or lanyard works for me you can clip it to your landing net, then it is always were you need it . The only thing I have forgot in resent years was my thermometer left it in the swim someone had a good day it was a Reuban Heaton that I had for more than twenty years.

I'm a bit too OCD to lose anything. Everything not being used goes back in the box/bag. Everything i need to hand goes in a tray and i check, double check and triple check my swim once i have packed up :)

Lost a couple of lures to a boat and a far bank flower bed and 1 or 2 floats to a tree but that's all (tempting some very unfortunate fate now i reckon)

Tip to avoid costly rod breakages in trees - do not try and free the hook using the rod - rather put the rod down and just pull the line at the point after it has left the top eye of the rod - that way either the line will break or the hook will come free, along with little pieces of trees. No costly rod snappages as the rod is totally eliminated from the freeing up process.

Apart from the standard hooks and a few floats, just a bank stick, some disgorgers and dropped a brolly arm in a pool (I thought, s*d it, Fruitowl rescued it!) It's generally due to rushing to pack up because I end up fishing later than anticipated!

I like to fish 'balanced' tackle, the lowest breaking strain ( test) line always being the hooklength for obvious reasons, you only loose the hook!
I do however buy my hooks by the 100, 200 being delivered today, all the same size and pattern incidentally.

However just to prove I'm not an angel, my Barbel besotted friend showed me how he had tapped a ball onto the bottom of his Drennen specialist net pole so it would stop at his hand if he slid it out onehanded to net a fish.
Why do I need that I thought......mmmm:rolleyes:

Next trip and I'm into a nice fish just below the weir, slide MY specialist net out to net it....and you know the rest...yep straight into the water and away into the boil at the weir sill!!! )))-: :eek:mg:

However St Peter was looking over me and lo and behold up pops my net handle in the boil off the weir sill, just like a the sword of Excalibur!!
I grab the weed rake that was just handy and after a few anxious moments managed to snare the net first go.....:who.....easy peesy.

Thank you Mr Drennen for making such a superbly watertight net pole, and while I'm at it, thank you for the (free) expanding bush after the old one had gone hard.

Oh and there is now a ball on the end of MY pole as well! :D

Cheerz Garry.:w it is a good idea, even if I was a bit slow to realise it!

In the past plenty but, I have learn t. I mainly fish close in these days with a float and dont often try too reach those difficult places. Maybe I catch less fish but, I have not really noticed it. And I find this more enjoyable and relaxed than all that casting and trying too hard. I also before I leave a swim have a last good look round for anything I have left including litter. Learn t that by leaving the car keys behind once. If fishing under a tree I have learnt just to be very careful when reeling in and casting. Still occasionally get caught but, not very often. I probably often fish with too heavy a line than is needed, usually 5lb even for roach but, I find this a good general strain and it is often just about strong enough to pull from weed or a tree, the latter less so but, better than say a 2lb line.

Generally I'm pretty good and organised apart from the usually bit of end tackle!
Pots of size 6 and 8 dropper shot are my nemesis I always spill them when opening!
My friend However forgot to put baitrunner on and rod went for a swim and did circuits of the lake :-(

usual bits and pieces like everyone else, but by far the worst loss was a youngs "Trudex" pin kicked into the margin on the grand union at Tring. 3 and a half to 4 foot in the margin so seriously considered going in for it, but it was January and freezing so thought better of it. That hurt quite a lot. Wonder if it's stlll there and if so, in what condition!?

I tend not to lose fishing tackle but I have had a terrible history with pole top sections!

I've trodden on a couple and had 2 lots snapped by the wind too.

As far as rods are concerned I've not lost any but did snap a copule in the boot of the car . . . . . doh!

The worst was the tip section of my new Hardy Marksman float rod. Tried to cast a bait dropper with it (should have known better), got a wrap around on the rod tip. I can still hear the crack noise now.

I've lost loads of lures and spinners - the big treble hooks act like grappling irons. I've lost quite a few isotopes too. Line gets wrapped around one on the end of the quiver tip when you cast, and ping, it's glowing away on the river bed.

I had a habit of leaving bank sticks behind and other bits and bobs.
I realized my problem was taking too much gear I now fit all my gear in one bag and a quiver, the more gear you take the more you tend to leave stuff behind.
Cut down on your stuff mate

Put my camo coat down and couldn't find it for a week!

My brother dropped my Arial centrepin into the Thames when he was a nipper, I could have killed him as the margin was about 6ft deep and despite hours of searching we never did get it back

Wowwwww,

So many replys!
Turns out im not the only one! Thanks guys i feel a whole lot better now :D not at anyones unfortunate expense of course!

Im not so bad these days as i too seem to go a bit OCD, if somethin is missing i can rest until i find it! If its broke or the bottom of the lake then forget it.... Although i have scaled a tree in search of my grandads rapala lure that holds great sentimental value!

Just wish i could encourage my mate to do the same because hes alot worse than me still.... I'll just show him this thread :)

You're not the only one Peter.

When I used to pole fish the worst thing I managed to do was try and get over the top kits resting up against a side tray after coming back from taking a pee and getting my legs tangled in 'em which resulted in the uncontrollable gallop forward to keep upright and the only thing I could do was jump in my swim to avoid going in head first!

Must have looked a bit odd :)

Oh the floats I haven't lost. Loads of 'em.

The outer side of the big hawthorn tree next to one of my swims still contains not one, but two Dave Harrell wagglers hanging upside down as semi-permanent Xmas decorations and monuments to my angling incompetence shame.

I bought one of those Spin Doctor things for untwisting your line a while ago at £5 or so and lost it on something at the river bottom on the second cast.

Dozens of feeders. Assorted leads.

But nothing left behind. I have a really good check round before I leave, to make sure I've not left anything or any litter or anything.
