Hi Percy, welcome to FM.

Barbel fishing gear . . . I`d recommend a kevlar helmet and a flak jacket.

Hello Percy.

What sort of range from Essex are you thinking of travelling? Any specific rivers? Budget restrained on tackle?

I'll sort you out with solid suggestions if you answer these questions.

Unless Freddy gets here first with some thunks (like thoughts but without knowledge)

Traveling will not really be a prob like the look of the Severn and the Old river Lea
Budget wise I have about £300 pounds to spend wife permitting .........

Percy. If someone as experienced as RW is going to advise you and help.....jump on it.

Not many better Barbel anglers out there.

Good luck barbelling Percy.

Focus on location no matter what river you fish. It's a cliche but you can't catch fish that aren't there.

Use reliable, solid and balanced tackle. Most people will recommend mainline of at least 10lb, I use 12lb in conjunction with a progressive actioned 11ft 1.75tc rod.

Set your clutch to give line once the rod is in a nice battle curve. Don't be too heavy handed when trying to stop the first run that the barbel goes on when first hooked. The clutch and the rod should do the work.

Rest any barbel you catch in the net before taking from the water to unhook etc. this helps their recovery a lot. Make sure that its strong enough before releasing as well. I find resting the fish and holding it in the water one of the unique experiences of barbel fishing that makes it so great.

Expect to meet the odd secret squirrel on the bank but also the odd helpful soul who will chew your ear off!

Have managed to get a secondhand fox barbel specialist 1.75 test today from a advert in my local paper today for £60 didn't think that was to bad ???? The bloke I got it of used it for tench fishing also got a baitrunner reel of him it is loaded with 8lb line so he said wil have to get some 10lb or 12 lb on it
Have been looking at landing nets handles also to day in my local tackle shop
Not sure about what length to get , some of the banks I've seen on google of the Severn look high up compared to that of the Lea

Thanks for the advice so far everyone not sure about Kevlar helmet ????????

lol Sorry Percy, bit of a forum joke there. If you stick around long enough you`ll undoubtedly come across "Barbel Wars" references. Hence the kevlar helmet etc.

Hi Percy,
Some excellent advice above.

Have a look at joining a club like < Verulum AC > who have some excellent Barbel stretches on the river Lea , the Ivel, the Gt Ouse and the Colne; all of which have some great Barbel fishing.
It will certainly pay you dividends.

We might meet on one of these stretches next season.

After I'd been in the police a few years they decided that we should all get body protection. Being a dog handler I got sent to all the nasty jobs so we were first to get them. When I gt to stores I was gobsmacked to be asked which type I wanted; stab proof or bullet proof? It seems that we had to decide how we didn't want to be killed. :eek:mg:

After a bit of thought I asked them if they could do a special one with a bullet proof front for when I was facing armed robbers and a stab proof back for when I was facing senior officers. :D

I'm not a barbel angler but the best advice I was given for angling in general was:-
Don't forget to stop and smell the roses ;)

It's the same for me and intend to fish the tidal Trent. What would be a good rod to buy for this stretch of river.
