Shocking behaviour

I had a walk round my local pool last night. Whilst I was there, a Carp fisherman had a belting run, soon as he hit it, he knew it was a Tench. He proceeded to drag it across the surface as though it wasn't even there.

He was swearing and cursing his bad luck, the only reason I didn't say anything to him was because my missus was with me. He got the hook out of the fish, in a ham handed way and just threw it back in. This Tench was between 4-5lb.

I know Proper fishermen (or women) would never do a thing like this but it shocked me. Why do these people do this, when they know the lake has a population of Tench and is very likely that they will hook one?

I think this behaviour, which I have seen on more than several occasion, and from some famous names who should know better, is one of the reasons why I don't like carp fishing as it is done in the UK today.

There was an occasion at 3 lakes in Selby where again another well known name hooked and landed a big bream on his boilie and bolt rig. He had to be severley admonished by the bailiff for summarily dumping the brem in the canal at the back.

You're right Neil, such behavior is disgusting. People who do this are not real anglers.

i have witnessed the same thing, when i was fishing with my dad. there was 2 guys just down the lake from us who did exactly the same thing and i was disgusted and i was only 13 and its made a lasting impression and i would never do that. why do people do it.

Perfectly laid traps being disturbed by unwanted species is why people do it.

It shows an amazing lack of respect for your environment, the fish that reside in it and it also shows peoples inability to draw any postives from a situation.

Tench feeding on my bait shows me several things.

Fish are feeding and on the move.
My feed and hookbaits are desirable.
I've got my location right.
My rigs are efficient, as tench are much harder to hook than carp.

You will generally find that the people who do this have gone into their chosen style without a broad initiation into the other areas of our sport, or have been closetted in their sphere too long and need to broaden their limited horizons.

Yup, I've seen this happen to Tench, Bream and Pike, usually in high summer though when the campers are in abundance. I use the term camper as they are the ones who take one barrow of fishing kit to two barrows of Stella and are rarely seen unless someone caught a 25+ the weekend before.

Its easy to tell the real Carp anglers from these muppets though, the muppets usually have a full matching set of Fox kit whereas the dedicated sort use whatever works best...

i must be dedicated as i have only one fox thing in my whole kit.
i try not to touch mr bream as i dont like the slimy things, however, i have also had people ejected from lakes i have been fishing for mistreating them. once i watched someone gently ease a bream in , use his landig net, deposit fish on his unhooking mat, gently unhook the fish and finally kick the fish 10 feet into the air as they sent it back to the water. i wound in and reported this to the head balif. the morons concerned said they kicked a chicken leg into the lake: they was immediately banned for poluting the lake (idiots)

"the muppets usually have a full matching set of Fox kit"

Oops! Ahem, anyone want to buy some good-as-new Fox tackle?

Seriously Robert, I think that is rather a case of using the same brush to tar all!

I love catching decent sized tench and bream on the appropriate tackle, however on 'scaled up' carp tackle - they do, especially bream, tend to roll over and say (in fishy terms) "ok you got me, I'll come quietly" LOL

As Rik has already stated, if one is after carp and tench take the bait, then it tells us we have got the whole set-up just about right! ;o)

All I can say is that it happens too often, and something has to be done about these idiots before this sort of behaviour is used against us.
Please everyone have the courage of your convictions and remonstrate with the idiot and then report the idiot immediately to the owner of the water!

Malcolm, its just an observation on my local waters. We tend to get a lot of the kind of people who suddenly decide to go carp fishing, buy a full set of matching kit and proceed to chuck 4oz leads about without really knowing what they are doing. Fortunately they have a short season - june to september at most.

I got into a ruck with one of them last year, he managed to fling his lead into a tree on the far side of the lake and instead of going round and trying to retrieve it he simply cut the reel line at the rod tip and tied another readymade rig on. Strategic gesturing with a six foot bankstick led him to get off his butt and fetch the line out of the tree. He reported me to the club baliff who later came round and thanked me :).

"a short season - june to september at most. " that sums them up just about right for me mate! ;o) I know exactly what you are saying, but I have bought a lot of Fox stuff over the last year or two and would hate to meet up with you lot and someone then remember what you had said! LOL

I have been fishing on and off for about 36 years, and have built up and developed towards carp angling - have tried most methods but prefer carping at the moment.

Better make sure you have a Korda baseball cap or a small quantity of Nash swivels then :)

I have been fishing since I was six, fourteen years coarse, twelve years sea, then back to coarse and now trout and carp to add to the panoply. I have had much drunken abuse hurled at me by these one-season-winkers (BIG Ivor Biggun Fan BTW) for only fishing ONE rod and an ABU one at that. Never mind the fact that I've caught just as many carp as they have and I've enjoyed myself fishing a waggler on a second rod for perch and roach between runs.

Sometimes I think the fishing license should be graded like the motorcycle license, learners should be restricted to one rod and a breaking strain of no more than 3lb until they pass their test (joke).

Might be a joke Robert - but a bloody good idea all the same! LOL Totally unpractical, but good all the same.

Another thing I would like to this. I fished the pool in question today and was speaking to a regular, he said that he witnessed the same person who caught the Tench, catch a nice Bream.

He got the Bream in and kicked it back into the water. I am going to have words with this thug as soon as I see him. The Bailiff has been told but it turns out that this guy is the Bailiffs drinking partner.

Unfortunatley several years ago I watched a guy drag a near double figure bream up the gravel rather than use his net. Before he could kick it back into the lake I felt the uncontrollable urge to administer a rather large right hand.I put the bream back myself and when he woke up I explained the error of his ways to the formentioned carp angler.
It's only the second time whilst angling I have felt the urge to do this.Nower days I'm a bailiff on a wide range of venues and would remove anyones ticket for doing the same thing.
Call me sentimental but I rather enjoy catching big Bream.

There is absolutely no dougt that if you target a species and then succeed in catching it you get a great deal of pleasure in doing just that. Howver if you do catch an unwanted species you shouldn't get upset about it.

I caught a lovely chub the other day whilst barbel fishing. Rather than being upset, I was delighted.

Well done Neil......

I catch many 'unwanted' carp when bream fishing and each one is treated with the utmost respect when on the bank. Carp, bream or tench it doesn't matter - they all get to lie down on my unhooking mat !

Same with me too Ron and gary - I have caught PB tench and bream whilst fishing for carp! Unfortunately when 'outsiders' or whatever read some of the associated comments to some of the topics covered in these threads - ALL get tarred with same brush!

Because ONE 'person' who happened to be fishing for carp has done it, all carp anglers seem to be considered guilty of it.

I honestly don't think thats the case Malcolm. Unfortunatley I myself have witnessed the scenes described at the start of this thread. And, although I have seen many carp anglers (by far the vast majority)catch tench and bream and give them the respect they deserve, what sticks in the mind is the idoits who behave poorly towards what they see as lesser fish.

I think specialist anglers have leared a lot about fish welfare due to carp anglers developing new products (sacks, unhooking mats, antiseptics, etc.) so in a lot of ways they should be applauded. So, I don't think that they all get tarred with the same brush, it's just human nature to remember the things you find abhorrent.

I have seen things like this aswell. It makes me sick. As a Carp Angler for 17 years, and a straight specimen hunter before this, and a match/pleasure angler before that. I have to it seems to be the instant big fish anglers with this attitude. As Carp Angler says catching fish of other species gives you confidence. I fish waters where runs are thin on the ground. Any run gets the heart beating, and examination of the hook hold on Bream and Tench can help the development of tactics along. It's all about respect for nature. The same type of people seem to be the toy admirals aswell, and show an increadible lack of respect for other anglers. I had better stop there, as I have just bought a Fox Royale rucksack and I swear by series 1 hooks.
