It looks like a Anti Tangle Feeder Boom used for legering, it makes the link kick out so it cuts down on tangles, i think.

Cheers thought it would be quick so line goes down the tube , feeder attaches to the quicklink ? Is there a special circumstance where I would use it , other than anti tangle ?

Have seen them used where there's stuff on the bottom that you don't want to risk the line catching under or where there are abrasive aspects such as rocks.
Quite often used over mud too.

That sums it up for me. Especially on muddy bottoms when you don't want the swivel on the lead to choke up with mud or weed as they can when buried.

It looks like a John Roberts Feeder Boom to me. Probably an older black one before they got in on the whole camo thing and started making them green.

In slightly longer lengths they are very useful for wafting a deadbait in the flow for pike, anchored between a float and lead.

now I know what they are called I was able to do some googling and found this pic which isn't quite what I expected
plus this link from FM which is short but offers alternatives. I actually bought a giant Box that said "Carp Gear" from Go Outdoors , I think, which is how I ended up with them , you can sell anything to Nooby Anglers.
