Tying hair rigs

Although I have no problems tying hair rigs for carp rigs using the knotless knot given that the eyes on the larger hooks are big enough to take two passes of braid and larger diameter line, I come unstuck when trying to get say 6 or 8lb fluoro twice through a size 14 hook for a feeder rig. So if I can't use a knotless knot to make a hair rig what approach should I be using?
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Cheers

Yes, there are but all tied to mono, aren't they? The rig suggestion I'm following from this week's Anglers' Mail uses 8lb fluoro to a size 14 hook with a hair rig.

I have got hair rigs made using size 14 Preston PR38 eyed hooks with 8lb Berkely Trilene. Either your fluorocarbon is large diameter (and most is thicker than comparable mono) or your hook eyes are a bit small, or worse, a combination of both. Try the Prestons, they are designed for hair-rigging. I suggest you adapt the Anglers Mail rig to suit you.

Try Carp Hooks rather than just normal coarse hooks.

Drennan do a good range of specimen eyed hooks.

Does it not tell you in the article what line and hooks they use?

Many thanks for this. I didn't know that some hooks have bigger eyes. I've always used Drennan hooks as they're all my local tackle shop stocks.

No, Steve, no details given. Just 12 or 14 hook and 8llb fluoro.

No, Steve, no details given. Just 12 or 14 hook and 8llb fluoro.

Now you're going get bogged down by the fact that hook dimension vary massively between manufacturers. Take Peters example, a Korum S3 it has the same size gape as a Drennan Carbon Specimen hook size 8, same goes with a size 12 Korda Wide Gape hooks, the gape matches that on a size 8 Kamasan B980.

The only small (old school sizes stated) hooks that have large eyes are; Drennan Super Specialist Barbel hooks and Guru WGM hooks, though they both have inturned eyes, which isn't normally desired or try Guru Pellet Waggler hooks as they have out-turned eyes (all Guru hooks are barbless).

Korum S3s or Kamasan Animals I'd suggest. Both really good hooks for making up knotless rigs and they'll both stop just about anything in it's tracks.

I use them both for stopping tench in their tracks or hitting and holding carp and they both do the job admirably.

I do like the colour of the S3s though. Other than that, there's nothing between them really.

I like Kamasan Animals but their place in my heart has been usurped by the Preston PR38

By the way Acbruce, you say the fluorocarbon is to be used in conjunction with a feeder. What kind of rig is this and how long is this hooklength going to be??

I only ask because the whole point of fluorocarbon is presentation. If you're going to fishing a short hooklength, close to a feeder, I wouldn't waste my time with fluoro because a feeder rig is, let's face it, pretty bleeding obvious really.

Sometimes you can get away with cutting the line at an angle to get it through the eye a second time.

Failing that there are a few snell (whipping) knots that you can use.

With the extra thickness of the fluro, I wouldn't think you need a particularly small size 14 hook and would go with something on the larger size.

It was a Duncan Charman rig in Anglers' Mail a couple of weeks back that I was attempting to copy. Thanks to all for the replies.
