Had an exeat Saturday so set off for the Ribble near Ribchester. Setting up as usual I set up my landing net and dipped it in the river. Set everything else up and cast out caster and maggot into a fairly fast flowing river. To my joy I got a good bite straight away and was obviously into a big fish, probably a good barbel. As I played the fish I looked to get my landing net ready only to realise that it had gone! As I frantically searched up and down while trying not to loose the fish it started to dawn on me that the current had gently drawn my net away and it was probably somewhere in Preston Dock by now. Luckily the fish came off as the thought of 'tailing' a barbel did not appeal.

I manged to redeem my dayout by getting my wife to bring out a spare net but I'm now trying to console myslef to the loss of £70 worth of tackle. Having steeled myself to a new purchase I'm thinking of the Fox stalking handle; any views?

Hi Mattthew,

I had the Fox Stalker and it stopped locking after two months leaving it expensively useless.

I replaced it with the Drennan Super Specialist which is a cracking bit of kit.

Hope that helps.

Sadly it seems that the Keenets is not in production any more and a quick ring around can't find any so I think the Drennan is for me.

Another question if I may? I have been using a Drennan 'D' shaped net up to know but its a bit of a pain to carry along with chair etc. Talking to a pal hwo uses one of the carp set ups with a spreader bar and the two carbon arms. Seems it might be easier to carry in my quiver etc. Grateful for advice and any recommendations. Presuming I only need the smallest which seems to be the 36". TIA

oh dear, I've just bought the Fox Stalker (albeit at half price). I hope it doesn't give up the ghost as quickly as ****y's did.

I'd steer clear of a triangular net for river fishing. Easy to transport but nowhere near as good ro use as a round or oval net. I've got the fox predator net in the largest size, and it is ideal for Barbel and chub (although Iwoldn't want to land a large pike in it, despite the name)

Its a shame Drennan dont make those D-Nets bigger (and A bit deeper) than the largest 24 incher- which is a bit small for barbel to recover in.

I recently bought the big 30inch Korum rubber barbel spoon net..............and then realised the same thing re transporting it.

I have since bought the Korum chair and net bag, which enables you to sling them both over your shoulder (will take un-hooking mat etc too):

I have to confess I've yet to use either, but I should now be able to walk a good distance with both hands free, although the bag seems quite big!!

Keenets don't exist anymore. I'm trying to find anyone who makes that same handle, but the Drennan has to be a good second choice.

What concerns me more and more is the reliability of the 3/8s BSF thread connection. It's just not up to the job with bigger fish. And all that screwing and unscrewing can't be any good.

Matthew I would imagine that anyone who can afford to spend £70 on a landing net doesnt need to worry too much about which sort to get. Why not get several cheap ones that are suitable then if you lose another one it wont matter.

I recently invested in a Drennan Super Specialist for around £38 - as it extends from up to 3m (ish) and telescopes down to a sensiblelength for carrying it seems a pretty good compromise for most "normal" angling. So that is another yes, if you are still counting ?

Ever thought of fitting a lanyard and anchor to stop the floataways ? The Drennan has a metal endcap, I am sure you could modify if required....

I have plumped for the Drennan Super Specialist finally and this time I'll try and be a bit more careful. I can just as easily dip the net as I play the fish. Thanks for all the advice guys; much appreciated.

I can vouch for the Korum...it is a brilliant piece of kit.

I also use a Middy 30+ Stalking handle with a fold down net for creeping about on the river. No nonsense, robust and as cheap as chips.
