In the 70's I was a seaman on a small vessel. Our cabin below the foredeck had a hatch above our bunks. The foremast light directly above that. Off the Azores on a transatlantic job we were showered by flying fish at night. My theory was they were attracted by the lamp. Trying to sleep was constantly disturbed by the bggers flapping on the floor. They are however beautiful fish, their flying ( pectoral?) fins are amazing.

Superb pictures.

I was travelling up a river in Mombasa a few years ago and suddenly we were surrounded by 'flying fish'. Not as many as illustrated here, but it was wonderful to witness.

Great stuff. Somewhere in the archive I have a pair of dried "wings" of a Flying Fish.

Love great cinematography and proper wildlife fillums without fakery and people-catching "drama". I see that there was a nice one repeated on the telly tonight - Natural World - The Himalayas.

BBC iPlayer - Natural World: 2010-2011: The Himalayas
