Apologies if you have seen these already but i have been spending many fine hours over the last few nights catching up with these interviews made by Go Fishing with all sorts of famous anglers, match or specialist.

Highlights for me so far have been Ian Heaps, Mick Brown, John Wilson, Peter Drennan, Denis White, Tom Pickering, but all worth a watch really. Just a pity they didnt make these interviews while some of the other greats were still around.

Most are on youtube i think.

Only thing that comes to mind though..do you have to be from Yorkshire or Notts to be a famous angler?. Where are the Londoners or southerners or were they always ignored so far as fishing for England is concerned?

Like: Stevie Gardner, Will Raison, Steve Saunders?

There have been, and are some excelent anglers, match anglers too, from the South . . . . . .

Strangely though, agruably the great innovators of the fly fishing world, G.E.M. Skues and F.M. Halford were born in Newfoundland and Birmingham respectively, although they honed their skills and art on the Southern Chalk Streams and indeed their fame as well.

I'm looking forward to my own episode in some future Infamous Anglers series ... though would they be able to find an interviewer-presenter with the guts to face me...?

When I first started fishing in 1968 I was hopeless. Still am, but in those days I fished 18" deep all the time because that's how I'd been shown to fish by the only other person I knew who fished. He was hopeless too.

One day I was fishing at the Fleets Dam near Barnsley when it was owned by the Star Paper Mill. While I was there a lad a few years older than me arrived on a motor scooter. He came and spoke and on seeing how I was fishing asked me for the rod. While he had it he took off my 16 eyed hook to 5lb line and replaced it with a smaller and finer spade and hook to nylon from his own wallet. He then showed me how to plumb the depth and explained a few things that I had never come across. That day I caught more fish than I had in the previous year.

That lad's name is Dennis White and he still takes the time and trouble to put young anglers on the right path. As far as I'm concerned he was the backbone of the successful Barnsley Blacks team without ever seeking the fame that he deserved. I'll look out for that program.

Thanks for highlighting it. :)

Would they find anything to talk about?

I don't know about a little internet infamy being much of a reason to bother interviewing you. Maybe your former associate Mr Wade might be invited to do an episode, as he is famous!

Moving away from Paul's self-indulgence and back on topic.

I'd say the anglers the anglers named represent a good spread of coarse anglers both in terms of genres and location:

Ian Heaps Wales (south west?)
Mick Brown Birmingham
John Wilson London
Peter Drennan Oxford
Denis White t'up north (Barnsley?)
Tommy Pickering Yorkshire

Clive,

I was lucky enough to chat with Denis White once. The man should have a knighthood, NOTHING was too much trouble, NOTHING was held back. Not only arguably the most knowledgeable but I'd say the nicest man in fishing - a proper gent.

Even Londoners were shouting "Alreet, Fatha?" and giving him a big hug. Tells you all you need to know......:)

See how the Old Usuals dance. I promise you, some of your high-end fishy betters - people not known too many of you here probably - would take down networks and satellites and take out a hit-man contract to stop a P.B. interview!

I should have clarified my Londoner/southerner point - i was thinking of match fishing in the 1970s - that golden era with Ivan Marks, the Ashursts, the Barnsley Blacks etc. After that we did get Steve Gardner and the others from the south. Im struggling to think of many top match anglers from the south before then though - Ray Mumford certainly. Were they ignored/overlooked by the Angling Press at the time or were there none?.

I think you're quite right - but nobody mastered malapropisms quite like ****ie Carr and he's got to be worth a mention in dispatches for that alone :)

Yes, yes, Paul, weren't you going to bring down BFW; still going strong(ish) by all accounts....

Grow up Paul, your world may begin and end with you, but away from your computer there is a big (real) world that really doesn't care!

Yes. We've seen a Tuesday morning All The Old Politicos / Yesterday's Parties Outing, with known suspects trying very hard to be polite and nice, but really only just a few minutes or hours away from no-reason, Pinball Machine on "Tilt", kick-off. Very revealing.

Paul, insults so early on, my, you're impatient today.

This is my last post on this thread, as I'm fed up of threads being pulled into an excuse for Paul to display his self-centredness.
