what is the benefit of putting a plastic bottle over the top?

I believe it stops the alarm taking on water if you think it may not be 100% waterproof in the rain. /forum/smilies/wink_smiley.gif

it was 1st shown on Blue Peter but I am sure they had some sticky tape and stuff also on theirs
