Approx six weeks of barbel blanking on my local River Loddon finally came to an end on Saturday evening/night. Managed a few from several different spots and was very pleasantly surprised to include two doubles of 11:12 and 12:04.

That of course now means I'm probably embarking on another series of frustrating blanks :eek:mg:

Fished a North Devon ressie that I have had my eye on for a while and frankly struggled, the water holds 3lb roach, 12lb bream and a good head of tench but although I was catching consistantly the larger specimens evaded me. Much amusment with the bailif when I couldnt find my ticket and a bit of a telling off for being home 2hrs late but a great session on a superb water.

Until yesterday we've endured 30C+ temperatures so I've been restricting my fishing to a couple of hours before dusk an the local stretches of the River Vienne.

On Friday I tried a previously overlooked swim in the next village. It looked promising in that there was 4 feet of water a rod length out, a weedy margin and a steady flow. Yen minutes in I had a bite. Sadly it was a mozzie  Strange as we've not been bothered by them locally and I hadn't felt the need to bring any repellant. Three mozzie bites later I got a real one, but not the sail away carp take I was expecting. It was a smash and grab bait robbin' chublet. Over here maize and sweetcorn outfishes boilies and pellets and unfortunately that means putting up with chub and bream when carp fishing. :(

Ended up packing up early due to being bothered by mozzies and chublets. In fact I left in such a hurry I left my rod rest behind and had to return for it the next morning.

Saturday I resorted to spinning the river and had another catfish of around 20lb. It's becoming like groundhog day - every session I've had one, not two or none, but one catfish and each one has been 20lb +/- around 1lb. The 1.5km stretch of river must be littered with the things despite my Siberian neighbour having eaten at least 6 of them this year.

Yesterday I ventured down to the river again to check whether the 22lb catfish was still visiting the lower end of the mill race. It usually comes in from the main river into the backwater around 8:30pm and I caught it right under the rod tip in less than 2 feet of water a couple of months ago. He's still there.

My brother-in-law is coming out for a week soon and I'm planning a little surprise for him :D

Tuesday at Marsworth ressie bream not showing still. Had a nice lot of roach instead on 5m whip with hemp and caster.
Weds I went to a new fishery for me to prepare for a forthcoming match.
Had a nice day chucking cage and pellet for big carps and bream.
Friday I had a lazy day down the local pit, 2 carp rods, pod and alarms ( turned right down) and blanked. Better than daytime TV though.
Sunday. Old Bury hill on the old lake, we had been warned in advance it was fishing hard but we persevered. The results for a venue normally won with 80 to 90lb of skimmers looked more like a canal winter league in February...

A nice variety of fishing Simon... if you could have known about the blank on Friday you could have had those alarms on full blast :D

Got talked into going trouting against my better judgement. Didn't really fancy it and neither did the trout. Managed to save the blank courtesy of a couple of mugfish but got roasted in the sun and picked up my first wasp sting of the season...fortunately just a dab on the finger so didn't suffer my usual unpleasant reaction. Got a finger like a courgette tonight though and it itches like hell.

I had a great morning yesterday, not because of amount of fish caught, but just walking lightly over a completely new stretch to me and investigating some new areas.

Tactics were dead simple, 6lb line straight through (maxima), size 10 super specialist hook, drennan medium feeder and a series 7 reel. Using a sliding rig with one or two swan shot, and a bunch of worms. I was spending about 10 mins in each likely looking peg and moving on; I probably could have baited one swim and had a fair few fish but I wanted to cover 2 miles of water just to see it.

In one swim, I'd been flicking out worm sections for a short while and on my second cast, after flicking out towards a tree, this chub took the bait on the drop and surprised me! It came in at 4lb 4oz, but was skinny. Certainly got a lot of winter potential

it was hard going, especially when I inadvertently walked into a private wooded area. I wasn't too concerned until I heard a load of hounds coming near, was well relieved when I got over the barbed wire fence!! Went a different way home after that (ie, I went the proper way round!).

Some great looking swims, I'll be trying it a fair bit.

Haven`t been able to do much fishing recently so I was looking forward to a day with a couple of mates at the local day ticket pond.

Arrived at around 8am and quickly tackled up a waggler rod. Plumbed up, cast out and set the rod in the rests and unusually for the pond it resulted in a small bream first cast. Great I thought, we could be in for a bonanza day!

About 2 hours later that thought had definitely left my head. I`d had a few bites on maggot corn and wheat but nothing that resulted in a fish. Dave was catching the odd bream on feeder tactics and Keith had caught a hard fighting tench of about 2lbs early on and then hooked something that was giving him quite the runaround on his relatively light tackle. I went over to help and after about 5 minutes managed to slip the net under a feisty 4.5lb carp.

Sitting back down I decided on a change of tactics and quickly set up a method feeder. The first cast, the rod went into the rests and I turned to do something only to have the rod almost jump out of the rests. I thought for sure the fish had hooked itself but when I began to reel in there was nothing there. After that it was mostly annoying little plucks and pulls with only one more proper wrenching method feeder bite where I connected with something for a fraction of a second.

Despite enjoying the day it was starting to become a little frustrating. My two companions weren`t exactly emptying the pond but they were catching the odd fish. Ok I thought, back to the waggler, a change of bait and go for broke. Off came the 18 hook and on with a size 8 and a big piece of flake.

The float had barely had time to settle before it twitched and then slid away. Strike and I was into something that definitely wasn`t happy about being caught, it didn`t feel big but it was a scrapper. After a short but satisfying fight a very solid tench with huge paddles for fins surprised us all when it weighed in at only 1.5lbs, all of us thought it would make 2lbs.

The next Warburton`s victim was an ambitious roach that must have struggled to fit the bait in it`s mouth. Then it went quiet again.

After some time I noticed a few ripples under some overhanging nettles just to my right. Suspecting they were being caused by a fish and having nothing to lose I stuck a new piece of flake on the hook and dropped it as close to the nettles as I dare. It wasn`t long before the float shot under and after a spirited fight a carp of just under 4.5lbs was resting in the net. Score one for observation!

By now it was early evening and the occasional fish was showing on the surface. I`d been periodically throwing a few dog biscuits out but they were mostly being attacked by fry. I went to chat with Dave and we both saw a ghosty that had made a few appearances during the day passing through his swim towards mine.

"I`m gonna catch that" I said to Dave.

I headed back to my peg and as I didn`t have a floater rod set up I decided to improvise. I slid all the shot up under the float, hooked on a piece of flake and lobbed it out a few feet in front of the approaching carp. The carp headed directly for the bread, ignored it completely, snaffled a couple of dog biscuits and then turned, took a moment to size up the bread and then slurped it down! A solid strike to set the hook and a few minutes later a very lively 5.5lb ghost carp was in the net. It proved to be a very uncooperative subject for photography but I managed to grab this shot.

Far from the best days fishing I`ve had up there but enjoyable nonetheless and the two carp were very satisfying catches, not so much for their size but because I set out to catch them.
