Over the past few years can you think of any truly innovative angling products that have been totally new? Or are they just improvements on existing tackle.

I believe that the first baitrunner was the Shimino Triton Seaspin - late 80's, still not a bad reel now except it only has a single handle...............:wh

I think a lot of innovation has happened in all decades that i have fished 70s-now, but most in the 80s-90s perhaps?. Lots of innovations from match fishing in the 60s-70s - swingtips, quivertips, wire stem stick floats, swimfeeders, closed face reels. Since then it has been specimen hunting/specialist angling that has led the way - maybe i am wrong, just an opinion.

I've not seen much that's totally new for a while, plenty of innovations and tweaks to older concepts though. Plenty of stuff that people want us to think is new when it isn't really.

Gardner Pop Up Aligners and Ace Pop Up Pegs don't do anything that couldn't be achieved with shrink tube, rig rings, bait floss and such, but it's a lot less hassle.

The relatively new Angletec lead system is also an interesting tweak on standard leads/lead clips or in line leads.

There seems to have been an awful lot in the way of bait development in recent years although what's genuinely new and not a take on something that's already been out there i'm not sure?

Where's Laguna when you want him? :D

I would imagine that an area of angling that have grown the most in recent years is commercial bagging fisheries, so i would look to methods or equipment exclusive to these "new" waters for innovation. Not really my area of understanding though. The whole carp/barbel scene also grew incredibly in the 80s onwards but a lot of the innovations associated with that are no longer new.

Nobody does what we do binka, but if i'm perfectly honest; if you want to make it in this industry you do need to be different somehow, and being different doesn't necessarily mean radical.

Most are just adaptations or design changes, versatility and adaptation is what we're currently seeing, its the demand that drives innovation.

ps. anyone can invent!

The maggot clip? - although we were using a hair rigged smaller hook to a larger hook in the early 90's - filling the smaller hook with maggots and sticking a small piece of cork on the tip (so you were only fishing with one hook and gaining some bouancy) .

Originally designed for Snapper fishing in deep water I believe. Not immediately relevant to the thread except to highlight how much more info is shared between different disciplines. The carp/specimen guys have developed very useful strategies for match and general pleasure fishing and encouraged any angler to think beyond regular traditional tactics. We are all better informed about alternatives these days. Even if like me you seem to pick the wrong option.
