I have just read couple of fishing mags and they seem to discount F1s as carp

E.g. , he caught F1s and carp down the margins

It is clearly a carp but, being a recognised hybrid species, it's easier to say F1 than crucian/common carp hybrid. Perhaps Commucian or Crumon would be more apt...or not?

Can F1 hybrids breed with each other or are they sterile like mules?

Initially it was suggested that all F1s would be infertile. Similar was suggested about naturally occurring roach/bream hybrids. It's been proven that not all are sterile though.

The ones being called 'F2's aren't actually second generation hybrids, not actually hybrids at all. You can get second generation hybrids though back-crosses more likely.

Let's face it, F1's are just an addition so that the matchmen can have easy 'carp' fishing during the winter months................................;)

Tut, tut, Jerry, you've only presented half a bait there. You've forgotten the bit about them not growing too big.

It has always been my understanding that these were the fish that have been bred in Europe for decades specifically for the commercial farming of table fish.

They were never meant to be a sport fish, fast growth and ability to withstand poor conditions being the prerequisite for there selection.

Obviously if you wanted to stock a truly wild breed of Carp, Europe is the last place you would look.
