having just spent a couple of hours watching some cracking free dvds from my local tackle shop. it raised a question in my head, i watched as des shipp caught fish after fish from the first put in, so do these guys have amazing skill or are the pegs pre-baited

i once fished in Ireland ( 20 years ago) and the guys that stopped in the same B&B as us knew john wilson and told us that he employed guys to pre-bait swims for weeks before he arrived

so what's the truth , are these guys fishing gods or fishing frauds

I saw a Steve Ringer vid , he was fishing to an island on a ommercial having a fish a cast. He did say it had took him 2 hours to build the swim casting the method , very accurately every minute or so to build up the swim. The only advantage he seemed to have was there were only 2of them on the lake.

As he seems to be able to reproduce this in matches I eould say fishing God.

We'd all like to think these experts have feet of clay and, in some cases, they do. I could make a better job of it than Robson Greene, given the budget, locations and the skippers and guides, because I'm not a screaming Mary every time I get a fish on!

All these new DVDs are filmed on commercials and it may look as if it's fish after fish every chuck but the films are edited and any lulls cut out. I wouldn't pay for a modern fishing DVD when there are enough fishing programmes on digital, cable and satellite and tons of instructional videos on YouTube.

I got 2 free DVDs with my Maver pole entitled "Commercial Sense" and they are a bit of a yawn-fest, punctuated by long adverts for new Maver gear.

If they want to film the static float method then I'd be their ideal man. Ha, ha, a new career beckons.

Seriously though, I should think they have to get a bit of an edge or it would make a pretty boring programme. They already have to deal with the the distraction of filming and the film crew clumping about, I think that if they represent the method they are using accurately then we can cut them a bit of slack.

The cream of them are often exceptional anglers. However, just because someone gets his mug on TV, doesn't necessarily make them an exceptional angler.

When's the first one coming out?

Although, I can go myself to see what one looks like.

Do you have a prefered float for the method? Stillwater Blues mine, but I've glued a lump of cork on top so that I don't get eye-strain.

:)given the production costs involved it would seem a necessary thing to
pre-bait the chosen location as I would think many of this forums members
pre-bait their swims prior to fishing I always pre-bait swims whenever its
practical.
as far as them being gods that's not the word I would have used the likes
of ALAN SCOTTHORNE,WILL RAISON ETC are far from being frauds they could
and would fish the pants of the vast majority of us these anglers are simply
in a league of their own. they have achieved everything through hard work
dedication practice and determination.

They are probably filmed over a number of days then edited down to make it look like one fish is coming out after another.

I'm with Sam, they've risen to the top through being exceptional anglers, and that's the reason they've being asked/paid to do DVDs.

And a little poetic licence regards editing I can live with, because i've sat through some h#llish boring DVDs and Videos.

If it were cheating to pre-bait then we are all guilty at some time.

You,ve only got to look at their record in top matches,to see that they have amazing talent and skill in abundance and anyone who says otherwise is just a jealous fool!!!

Its not the angler doing the hauling-in thats the problem its the Director of the production, they are a breed apart, and nothing must get in the way of getting the required shots into the can.
If anyone of us was offered serious money for catching a few fish to order Im sure that we would take all the (legal) short-cuts we could to tip the odds in our favour.

Its the same when so called celebrities are invited to fish waters to boost publicity, prime holding areas can be pre-baited and unfished sections opened up just for the day, anything to ensure a big catch or a large number of different species......its only human nature to want to show a water at its very best and we would all do it if we were in the same situation.

Just watch and take everything with a big pinch of salt!

John Wilson his not in the same league as Des ship

People like Ship, Ringer, Raison etc are pure class when it comes to clearing pegs with fish in. People like John Wilson, Matt Hayes and plenty of others who do footage for pure entertainment and earn good money from it would not be able to compete with the top match anglers.

And you have to remember, these top match anglers started out on canals, rivers, natural lakes, so know how to fish, period.

The entertainers normally get their swims well prepared (by others) in advance for their filming and get help and info from venue experts.

And they still struggle to catch :eek:mg:

I think comparing Steve Ringer, Bob Nudd, Will Raison etc to Matt Hayes, John Wilson and the like is a bit unfair to both parties really as they both occupy different parts of the angling spectrum; Ringer and Raison are professional match fisherman whereas Hayes and Wilson are more entertainers who specialise in angling. The match anglers are known for their skill in winkling out a winning weight from any water whereas the entertainers are more known for targeting a specific species to a specific weight and presenting the story on television. Matt Hayes is also Drennan cup winner so he must at least be a half-decent angler. I read an article by him once where he was always being asked how to get into TV angling, his reply is always that a background in journalism is essential and that being a fairly good angler helps.

The fact is as we all know -Matt hayes,s fishing is all staged, and he fishes waters which are unavailable to the general public or closed off specially for him,its not really fair to compare him to the likes of will raison,Des shipp etc, because there is no comparison they are naturally gifted anglers;)
