Can anyone explain the difference between a centrepin reel and a flyreel?

Could I use a flyreel for trotting?

Thanks in advance.

I thought it was twins to begin with but something just wasn't right... I reckon it's a set up and the first one's been framed!

Fly reels are glorified line holders with a ratchet that stops the line spilling off it. Centrepins have a switchable ratchet that is not usually as strong as that found on a fly reel. With the ratchet switched out, a centrepin should run very freely.

No, at least none of the fly reels I've ever encountered could be used for trotting.

Thank goodness for that. :)

Right, I bit the bullet and bought a cheap centrepin off e-bay.

It arrived today, had a look at it then I thought how do I put line on it and lay it evenly. :eek:mg:

Can anyone help? (Please keep it simple cos at the moment my brain is suffering from overload).

Ta sumtime, glad you're 'like me and working in proper measurements. :)

Any suggestions as to line strength, I'm hoping to trot it down the Ribble or Wyre.

I used to trot with a fly reel. Its just that you have to keep paying out line by hand. I got quite used to it and never had a problem. On slow or slowish rivers it was Ok. Never tried it on a fast river though. Not recommending it, but if you only have a fly reel which are normally a lot cheaper than center pins, it is possible to trot with one. The other problem was the slow retrieve because of the narrowness of the drum so, I put plenty of backing on to increase the diameter. Where there is a will, there's a way.

4lb Bayer Perlon, as this is a floating line and you'll want that for trotting.

Thanks you.

Now I've got to master single/double loop casting.

You mean the Wallis or Nottingham cast:eek:mg:.

Use a single loop pull of about 3' of line and flick out under hand controlling spool spin with your thumb, that's the thumb on your hand holding the rod, sorted:wh.

Don't try totting wagglers on the pin
