After last weekends success with upper tees grayling, I decided to try the same tactics on the upper swale. 'Sam Vimes' had a similar idea, and we had soon hatched a plan to meet up on Sunday morning. From the response I got when I mentioned about meeting up at 6.30am, I can only assume he wasn't aware of such a time in the morning! :D

Anyway, after meeting up and walking to the peg I had the best start possible when I realised that line had been gently peeling off my centrepin for the last 150m of walking - at least I knew the way back to the car now.

The fishing was slow to begin with, but regular changes of pegs soon had us both hitting into the odd grayling or suicidal trout. Mr Vimes had 3 grayling to my 2, of a decent stamp as well, and vice versa with the trout.

It was a good morning, hard work but a nice bend in our light float rods.

Some pics...

Weekend away in Wales with Big Phil plus the long sufferings having first made sure we had a day pass to go "bugging" for grayling. Friday found us on the Dee below Bala but the girls had done a rain dance & it poured down from the moment we got there until mid afternoon. River was high & barrelling through but fortunately not coloured & the runs that are rubbish in low water were spot on for this height of water. Not easy but the fish were there to be caught. Fished from about 11 until 4.

I had maybe 12 good grayling with the best 3 all over 2lb plus a few brownies. Phil matched that and lost what was either a huge grayling or [more likely] a salmon for good measure. Our mate Alex who we were staying with basically "ghillied" us all day and I doubt he had more than a dozen casts but still winkled a 2lb plus fish out from under Phil's feet just before we called it a day.

Incredible river for grayling and hardly anybody fishes it.

stuck it out on a Lincs resevoir last night until well after dark for carp which are supposed to be feeding well. The sky darkened and the rain, then hail came down in biblical proportions. It looked like it had been snowing. Both me and my gear were soaked through so I spent today clearing the mess up in the garage. I blanked to boot. Still tomorrow is another day ( a wet one so the forecasters say).:eek:mg:

I dare bet that was the same storm which we drove through John on our way home Saturday just as it was falling dark, we were close to the Lincs border and it was travelling east and a really heavy, leaded sky before wallop... hail-e-luyah!

Little time thursday so popped over to a little tributary of the trent.wa;ed downriver looking for a suitable overhanging tree or bush that was holding some weed or other detritus amongst its branches that reached into the water. After a five minute walk found what I was looking for tho the bank and footing was a bit awkward decided to give it a try. Just in front of the outermost branches was a foot of clear water then from there to me it was a jungle of long streamer weed.
Rig was a two ounce watch lead above a bead n swivel with a twelve inch hooklength tied to a size eight super specialist. bait was hair rigged 14mm trout pellet.
Four freebies upstream followed by my bait which was a small pendulum cast. Put the rod on the rest, sat down and "Wallup"-- over goes the rod really savage but nothing??? Chub I think.
Next cast and within a minute over goes the rod again and after a short but really hard struggle I net a nice barbel around seven lbs.
Then it started to rain making the bank really awkward and with no further bites I made my way to the downstream end of the swim and cast slightly upstream to the back of the tree branches and again I was into a small 5lb ish barbel that really gave above its weight, Top stuff!
One more fish that unfortunately came adrift and that was it.
I,m really enjoying these little short sessions of hook n hold barbelling, if the Trent isnt playing ball I can pass this little river on my way home and confidently have a fish or two .
I may be there again on teusday.

Binka-- that storm came over my house just between sheffield and worksop-- we saw it coming from over the pennines and was heavy rain and hail with very forboding cloud.
I txt my mate who was on the tidal trent saying it was coming his way and he had time to get cleared away before it hit him.

Tring anglers match today, new venue for me. A snake lake situated on a working farm near Ivinghoe beacon in Beds. Gin clear and leaf strewn it was difficult to know how to start.. Drew a fairly wide bit with an overhanging tree across.
Started on the waggler and caster until third cast when the clip let me down and the lot was in the tree.
Set up pole and found I wasn't far off the tree @ 14m.
Cupped chop and caster and had a cuppa. First put in and an immediate bite, a small perch. Stayed on this line for 5 hours and weighed in 1lb 1oz, 8 fish, all perch on worm section for 4th and no cigar.
Winner fished 20ft float rod and had 2lb + . Not bad for an octogenerian..
12 fished....

Sat on the Wye, woke up to frost 5am sat and drank tea, got frozen and put the warm gear on just as it started to rain. River was 7 ft or so over and hooking through and full of leaves. Started in the first of the 3 fishable swims and after 15mins the first barbel was in the net. Much heartened I moved up to the next swim and 20 mins later moved up to the last fishable? swim which entailed standing in a tree. 2 good pulls in quick succesion both missed and it was back to the van for breakfast and tea.
On the second trip through the swims there was no action and as the sun made a welcome apearance so it was lunch and a change of tactics to maggot and feeder. Fished up through the swims again and feedered in about half a pint into each of them. A couple of small chub and a grayling resulted. With an hour till dark I returned to the spam and just as the light was finally going the rod was nearly pulled out of my hands and a decent fish was in the main flow before I knew what was happening. Fortunately the 2.25 and 15lb line was enough and after a good few mins of excitement I managed to steer the fish through the trees and into the net.
It was too dangerous to fish the night so a couple of beers and a decent feed and into bed.

News just in after sifting my emails today and looking at the biggest of the six from yesterday which the roving guy kindly snapped for me (if you're looking in Alan many thanks) and sent over...

Not a bad weekend :)

Another day, another dabble.
After the weekend it crossed my mind to see if the grayling might prefer a stationary bait. Not exactly the purists method, but a swimfeeder and a tip rod can be effective at times that trotting fails.

It didn't take long for the first one to turn up at 1lb 2oz.

Within the next hour, a couple more came along. Both were bang on 1lb.
408059299.jpg

408059314.jpg

Then it went very quiet.

After about an hour of leaf frustration, and no signs of anything else, I opted for the float rod. The snag was that, by this time there was a gusty breeze blowing downstream. I didn't fancy being able to control a normal stick or avon very well, so I opted to try something that had garnered a look of bemused horror at the weekend, A Cralusso Bolo float.
408059362.jpg

Looks weird, fishes quite weird, but very effective in the right swim.
First trot was met with an instant response from another grayling at 1lb1oz. I was a smidge disappointed with this one, it looked like it was going to weigh more.
408059335.jpg

Much to my surprise, the second trot also produced a fish of 1lb.
408059321.jpg

The quick double had me thinking that there were plenty of hungry fish in front of me. Sadly, it wasn't to be. After another half hour or so I had my last bite of the day. A hook up at range resulted in the usual twisty fight. Unfortunately, before I'd made much impression on getting it upstream, the hook pulled. No more bites were forthcoming on either float or feeder. As I was starting to feel a little chilly and the wind was strengthening, I decided to knock it on the head while I still had enough maggots left for another short session sometime. Now all I've got to do is see if I can find the odd better fish rather than the pea pod pounders.

Please don't laugh at this as I'm speaking from a very distant memory, but didn't the grayling record back in the late 50's early 60's (when the tench record was 8lb 8ozs for yonks!) stand at 7lbs 2ozs??

Even at a lb it is a stunning looking fish, and good eating from what I understand.....

(sorry to highjack the Thread)

ps didn't fish at the weekend....

Aren't they just the most fabulous looking fish?

They certainly are.

I will never tire of catching them though I confess to being ever so slightly outraged by that so called "float".:eek:mg:

I suspect you won't be alone in that;). Such considerations don't even cross my mind. It caught me some bonus fish that a "proper" float wouldn't have done. That's the only aspect that I'm concerned with, function over form.

If it did stand at 7lb 2oz, I'd suspect that either a set of "magic" scales were used or a bad example of guesstimation. The current UK record (Thymallus thymallus) is 4lb 4.5oz, the IGFA world record is 4lb 12oz. No doubt bigger fish will have gone uncaught but I'd be very wary of anyone claiming a UK fish over 2lb bigger than the current record.

I've had the odd lump (unweighed) in the dim and distant past. I'd have beeen stunned if any of them went much in excess of 2lb. I'd certainly be a very happy bunny to catch a 2lb+ grayling now.

They are damned good eating. I haven't taken one for at least twenty five years. Barring a belly up disaster, I doubt I'll take one ever again.

Maybe elsewhere in the world TC (I believe they can grow bigger), thought it was slightly over 4lb here, not bad though for a fish that only lives about five years (may I have a small laugh:D;))

Sam, I'm interested to know your shotting pattern, olly and shot and the depth of the river when you trotted the cralusso flatty? Did it pull into your bankside in the flow or stay put where you cast? What bait?
Sorry for the spanish inquisition but I (and others I'm sure) are interested...
