We were all beginners once upon a time and I remember distinctly that one of the most confusing things was choosing a hook. With so many choices available and different advice from everyone you meet, it makes a simple decision turn into a complex one. Because of this, I just thought I'd make my first post a helpful one :) Here's a good beginners guide to use for fishing hooks - Fishing Hook Guide |Ocean Tackle Store

Hope this helps :)

Cheers

I'm a newbie too and the link is useful if a little daunting - I too didn't realize there were so many hooks available!!

Unless you are sea fishing, I wouldn't worry unduly about the majority of the hook types in the link. Some of the basics (gapes, points, shanks etc) are equally applicable to coarse fishing, most of the patterns are not.

I find that if the points are too sharp, I get them stuck in weed, leaves,
twigs and branches. Not to mention my clothes and/or fingers. :eek:mg:

One day, I might hook a fish with them. :D
