Reading some of the threads today and regarding old programs and old match-men which is not something I do not know a lot about so, I stand to be corrected. I was wondering if such a thing exists as specialized matches. I am thinking along the lines of rod and reel only, roach only, chub only, perch only, or any species only, only roach above a 1lb, only bream above 3lb or any permutation that makes sense.
I imagine a series of programs based on this would be very interesting. Thinking caps required, some of the old match-men might come out and show how its done, A bright and varied array of methods and baits would be on show and so on. Even someone like me might have a chance !
Most matches it appears to me these days are for lake/commercial-pole anglers and F carp and I imagine one match would look like any other. Which I have nothing against but, could it be made more interesting and varied if this type of thing does not already exist. I would want to watch something like this if it was televised. I imagine it would be quite fascinating; a wide and interesting set of skills would be on show and it would be hard to win.
Just thoughts to be expanded on or rubbished.

I might go along and watch, especially if there was some decent tackle stands and eateries along with it.:w

Wouldn't fish tho, fishing is too pure a pastime to be adulterated by competition.

Complex or what

You do see the odd rod only or no pole match mentioned but I feel that the main draw for match anglers is the buzz of competing against other anglers. I used to fish a lot club matches to the exclusion of other types of fishing. There was a points and league system that rewarded the angler fishing for lots of bits rather than wait for bigger lumps. There you have it....."bits" and "lumps". The actual fishes mattered but only on an equal footing with points and weights.
I think that is why most matches seem to be on commercials. More bites, more banter, just as much competitiveness without the hassle of the public and long walks.
I did enjoy my match fishing years (25 or so) but I enjoy my fishing much more now..fishing for fish not points.
It's what you enjoy. Everyone is different. Off tomorrow after old essox.

I wonder if more pleasure anglers would be encourage to take part if there were different types of matches with some aimed at their type of fishing. It must be quite daunting faced with competing against the pole/carp specialists all the time and quite a big thing to have to learn and become competent at if you just want to try a bit of match fishing?
