Migrating fish all have the same innate ability to navigate using the Earth's magnetic field, this is nothing new. What is interesting though, is that most fish have the ability to use electromagnetic field energy to locate metal objects, leads, swivels, hooks and the electrical impulses given by predators and prey fish. It has long been known that sharks, catfish and rays use this sense to locate prey and it is a matter of ongoing research that will eventually confirm that many freshwater fish have, to a varying degree; the same evolutionary trait.

Anyone seen the documentary a couple of weeks ago about magnets repelling sharks?

Which is why I am a firm believer in hook skins for barbel.

The Scientific name for it is "Magnetic Oriception." 20 odd years ago I went on a field trip to southern Spain with the guy who did most of the pioneering work in this field from Manchester University. Prof Robin something or other, can't remember his last name.
His view was that most animals possess MO including man, but in his case due to the advance power to learn, it's a sense we no longer tap into or use.
So it's not really new Paul
