DO PEOPLE mark and spod on rivers

Mostly not,

Good question - I'm sure some do, but generally baiting on rivers is better done with a bait dropper.

It would be difficult to do correctly unless there is very little flow, in which case, on most rivers a catapult would be my first choice (less hassel, less disturbance)

I was on the tidalThames recently. Wished I'd had a spod rod and a gallon of hemp when the tide turned......

I've spodded on the wider parts of the Ribble and the Lune but I now prefer to use my catapult. Like Mark H says; -(less hassel, less disturbance)

On most rivers, I find a big baitdropper does the trick (unlesss the river's very wide). Use a carp rod or similar to avoid expensive splintering sounds when you lob it in...
