Yes,its all beentalked aboutbefore but as people are joining all the time perhaps its time to look at whats new in the Clothing/footwear line and what is recommended from field studies etcfor use in the WINTER months!

In TWO parts:

1. Best clothing and footwear for the roving/mobile angler from the skin outwards!

2. Best clothing and footwear for the stationary angler who tends to sit behind his rods for hours-again,from the skin outwards!

I am about to start looking at new gear providing some improvements can be found to the current tee shirt and shorts!!!!!

(I wonder how many anglers really do fish in the winter??)

Next to the skin: I bought a long sleeve tshirt from millets, spf15 which makesit bothgoodfor when it's sunny, and warm as a base layer, cost about £12.

The sundridge sleepskin is an ace fleece for next to the skin or as a midlayer too.

For the outerlayers the best kit I have ever used is a sundridge igloo 2 piece suit. Mine died after about 7 years service and I haven't replaced it, they aren't cheap, but they are probably the best.

I know use an ex arfmy goretex camo jacket for roving, and in the wionter I'll use a heavy sprayway fleece under this and see how that works.

There's loads of reviews of outdoor gear in the review section on this site mate.

If you justwant base layer gear, check out running or outdoorshops/sites as they often have really good base layers for much less £££S than one with a fish on!

Outdoor world had a good sale on the other day!

Tee Cee,

I have used thermal 'undies' for years as most of my fishing is done late Autumn and Winter.

Last year I bought the Wychwood Salupets and Top Coat and have been snug and warm ever since. I got the 'deal' for about ?100 including a nice warm beenie hat as well.

For overnight sessions I tend to use the Trakker fleece trousers and jacket and they are excellent bits of kit. In fact for the Autumn I tend to use the Trakker kit and carry a Drennean waterproof jacket as they are really warm.

Marks & Spencers thermals (with Merinio wool) - keeps things nice and cosy. Sat by a freezing cold Ribble all day in February and stayed nice and warm. Got a bit hot during the walk to the river though!

Good proper thermal undergarments are crucial - I've got three Northface tops - one short sleeved, two long (one has a high zipped neck) and berghaus thermal long johns. I also have a pair of Craghoppers winter trousers which have a thermal lining. (All these from my local Go Outdoors - these always have a really good and reasonably priced selction Go Outdoors)

My son got me a specialist all in one neckwarmer and balaclava that is worn by these sailing types who think its fun to sail the Southern Oceans!

Top this off with my Sundridge Blizzard Jacket and Bib/Brace. Good waterproof boots with thick socks - not wellies! (unless fishing the Ribble with Corkers!!)

Toasty toasty, very very toasty

(Actually if I had to wear all of that at once - we're probably in a mini ice age and Frost Fairs have returned to the Thames!)

Thanks for all the above -I can mix n' match from this lot and once kitted out will probably be found fast asleep in my chair at 2am with the rods long-gone attached to a 15lb barbel due to excessive comfort!!

The thing is,will the wife notice that I have not returned........................

I wouldnt go without my thermal from M&S, i wear my thermal lined wellies with thermal socks and my feet are always warm. I also have a fleecy beanie hat. I do struggle with cold hands tho, i cant wear gloves, they are like having a bath with ya wellies on/forum/smilies/wink_smiley.gif

I also prefer winter for fishing as you mostly get the banks to yourself as the credit card anglers give up once we have a puff of wind.

Sundridge Igloo thermal suit. Not cheap but is by far the best all round winter suit I have ever used. It will keep you dry in the severest of wet weather and I have been out fishing in sub zero conditions and not even noticed with this suit on.

Get a running bear fleece jumper, dont know the web address but if you google "running bear in Alderley Edge" it will come up. Ive had one for ten years, cost me £13,about £20 now.Worn it with a base layer & goretex coat & its kept me warm in some very severe weather on top of the mountains in the Lakes.Wouldn`t leave home without it.
