I've just read another Thread where an angler said he went out fishing, sat in the sun and consequently got a sunburnt head ( probably with little or no hair ?)
It really needs to be said, that regardless of how much hair you have on your head it is absolutely crucial to wear a hat at ALL times - NOT only when the sun is out, or when the temperature is very high, or if it is cloudy, BUT AT ALL TIMES !!
I will not bore you with family history around this subject, or relate terrible stories (I've seen some of them!!) of skin cancer, particularly in Australia, but anyone who sits and fishes without a hat is really asking for trouble.
I wish we (in this country) would adopt the Aussie motto of ' SLIP, SLOP SLAP'............SLIP on a shirt, SLOP on the sunscreen, SLAP on a hat, which now covers not only Australia but the Globe. Unfortunately, we in this country don't seem to get it, judging by the countless numbers of people, not only anglers, who walk/sit in hot sun without a thought - or a hat !!
Anyway, that's my moan, but I repeat again, PLEASE, PLEASE wear some form of head gear, preferably with a wide brim (to protect the face) EVERYTIME YOU SIT AND FISH, be it in sun or total cloud - the danger is the same even if the sun is not out !!!
ps....As I occasionally end up sitting in the sun (for short periods) when fishing I also carry a pair of light fingerless gloves (Yes, it sounds OTT!) to protect the backs of my hands when holding the rod for long periods and the hands are exposed to constant sunshine....This I did after my GP noticed how brown my hands were......................sounds amusing, but no joke !!
pps No, I'm not a doctor, I just read a great deal...................................
