Hey

I am looking at purchasing an avon type rod and have my eyes on the Drennan series 7 specialist avon rod. although i am new to this strain of rods and cannot decide between the 1.25lb to 1.5lb. Also are there any alternatives you can recommend?

My target species are primarily tench andbarbel with the odd carp??

Regards

Got the 1.25lb series seven and its already first choice out of the quiver exceptional chub rod a pleasure to use.I've recently landed a carp just over ten and a 9lb 2oz barbel on it.They come with a quiver section and 3 glass luminous push in tips and with the 1.25 top a great all rounder.and no i don't work for drennan /forum/smilies/smile_smiley.gif

hi mate .,

Depends on which rivers you are going to fish mate.....1.25lb is very limited in its applications.....you will realy struggle in flood conditions....try the korum neoteric...quiver...1.75lb avon style top, plus 3 insert quivertips rated at 2,4,6,oz....had a pair of these couple of years ago...v.good rod for less than £100, or they do a twin top .1.75.and 2.2lb for about the same money, had a pair of these as well and was using 8oz of lead on the trent when in flood with the 2.2 top....and used to use the 1.75 as tench and bream rods on big gravel pits etc......a v.good rod....suggest you at least check them out.

back again

yes it does depend on the application i also own the korum neoteric twin tip just the job for launching 4oz plus of lead out when i fish the severn or the ribble when its tanking through. I'd still be tempted with the 1.5lb series seven though if river fishing still get a decent scrap from a chub and you shouldn't have any problem with the berties. In my opinion the korum is a tad overgunned for normal river levels. I'm thinking of getting the 1.5lb as well for that reason.

Well i'm already sold, as i said earlier the 1.25 is a great chubbing tool but for an all rounder it has to be a 1.5 and i'm getting another /forum/smilies/smile_smiley.gif

Hi, Have just become a member for Fishing Magic forum and have been reading your comments with interest. I have recently started fishing again (after a 10 year absence) on local still waters and now live close to the river Wye. I have also been looking at the Drennan series 7 specialist avon rod 1.5lb. My main passion is float fishing but I alsowant to have the option to ledger /use a feeder. Are all Avon style rods suitable for float fishing and what else would be worth looking at suitable for the Wye ? My budget is up to £100./forum/smilies/big_smile_smiley.gif

I've just boutght a Ray Walton 1.3 Barble Rod (made by JW Youngs) and I find its ideal for a mixture of float, trotting and ledgering. I have seen the 1.6 version for 68 quid on the web... very tempting...

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the info. Will be paying a visit to some local tackle shops soon, so will have a look. May have found just what I'm looking for on the web this afternoon. Diawa Barble Pro 1.75lb twin top @ £70.

I have just purchased the Drennan 1.5 Avon, as I wanted a rod to handle average carp, decent tench and the occasional chub. I am like many on here first and foremost a pleasure fisherman (returning). I reckon a decent 1.5 Avon rod would suit the needs of most like me...

Regards,

Paul
