hi all
I am after a backpack that will hold 2 lure boxes size 36x21x40cm and other bits of kit and 2 reels for spinning and must have some way of holding a hard travel rod tube size 100x10cm
I have looked at some of the fly fishing ones but there about £120 mark. i only want it for the odd fishing trip to the coast (rock hopping ) spinning for bass/ Pollock when on holiday.
there are a lot about on the internet but there all in the usa. any recommendations (priced around £30-40)

Korum ones are fab. Well built and I think around that price. They also do a range of 'bum' bag style things if A. You want something smaller B. are an American.

You wont find anything of real use in a tackle shop.

What you require is a rock climbing sack, these things are designed for exactly what it says on the label and are ideal for shoregaming.

The design leaves both arms completely free to move in all directions, has proper padded straps and waist wrap for load carrying and keeping it where is should be AND eliminating any movement.
Also they included strap system for carrying ice axes, ski poles etc, so a rod or three is a breeze.

I use a 30litre Berghaus Hot Ice circa 1985-90 and its been everywhere with me, and still going strong.

Drennan sell two different sizes of rucksacks, 25 litres and 35 litres. I've got both sizes, the bigger one for summer fishing, the smaller one for winter, when I travel light and fish for pike and grayling.

I don't think you could get a 100cm rod tube in either bag. You could slot it through the straps which hold down the flap, although you'd need to tie it on, other wise it might fall out.

Super Specialist Luggage - Drennan International

I've looked at more expensive rucksacks such Korum. They've got lots of features, are well made, but to me they seem heavy before you even start filling it with equipment.

In the past I've tried using single strap shoulder bags for lure fishing, I never found them that convenient. A double strap rucksack, preferably one designed for anglers rather than climbers, is the best solution. Glasgow Angling centre sell a wide range, for fly, sea and coarse angling.

Can I let you into a secret?

You dont have to buy a rucksack with a fishing name on it (Giff for shock face).

Try some of the high street shops or even the local market and you will find some great bags at a fraction of the cost of the "fishing bag".

Can I let you into another secret?

The perfect bag for all anglers has not been invented. So, when you want a new bag get a piece of paper, write down five things you want from a bag, put them in order of importance to YOU, then buy something which fits the top three things on YOUR list of priorities and compromise on the other two. (If you are really lucky you might find the perfect bag for YOU).

Jobs a good un.

PS. The decision making process outlined above also works for most other major purchases you may have to make and is especially useful when shoe shopping with the wife.....................Or even for choosing a wife;)

Good one Adrian,
This 'attribute ranking' process can be used for lots of purchases - one manager I worked for referred to me as a great ranker for using this process - or at least I think that's what he said! ;)

You can also go down the list you make and decide whether the attributes are 'Essential' v. 'Desirable' to help focus on what's important (sorry if that sounds a bit 'nanny-ish').
One of the key attributes to include would be 'meets budget constraints (e.g. under £20)' to make sure you don't spend more than you intended - depends whether that's essential or desirable - see above!

I have a brand new Lowe Alpine Airzone 25 rucksack for sale (Dark grey colour).
RRP is £70. Looking for £35 plus postage.

The bit that fits against your back is breathable to minimise sweating and it has loops to attach hiking poles, which may be used for a rod? The material looks like ripstop so it should be hard wearing.

PM me if interested.

How/When did you win that one Rob? ;):)

It was a Gaynor's Sports competition and I don't actually remember entering it, TBH - when you enter hundreds every week it gets hard to keep track. It's a really nice bag, I'm almost tempted to keep it :)
