I'm down by a pond that holds good tench.
Usually, as soon as the fizzing begins, you get bites.
But today, there is more fizzing thAn I've ever seen before, yet no bites other than the odd Rudd or perch.
Any ideas? I can't fine down too much as there is double figure eels and tench here!

If it is a while since you fished the spot perhaps the bottom weed has got thicker and is hiding you bait. I had a similar experience on a small local lake last year lots of fizzing and few bites which I finally put down to the weed growth.

There is no weed here at all. It's just leaf detritus.
I'm pretty sure that they are on my bait. If I lay off any loose feed for 10 or 15 minutes, the fizzing stops. As soon as I introduce it again, it begins.

A few thoughts. Crucians?/ Small fish disturbing gasses in the rotting leaves?/
I have seen this on the Witham and a friend is adamant eels do it?/ How many times have you sat and watched bubbles coming up in shallow water where you can see there is no fish?/ But most likely as already stated, some sort of preoccupation which comes full circle to the most likely suspect - crucians if they are in the water.

Double figure eels? Go for them!!

It's definitely not from the leaves. It's a shame I can't get a picture of it!
There is crucians in here, although how many i don't know as I've only seen one out.
Rudd don't create fizzing do they? There is loads in the pond.

How do you target eels? I've only ever caught the odd one here and there while feeder fishing.

Sometimes crucians can be an almost invisible species where their true population is unknown due to being bullied out by more pushy species such as tench and carp. Particulaly where anglers use stouter tackle for those species and the bites don't register.
Eels..dark/ overcast/dusk. Strong tackle/ No resistant end rig/ very light bobbin/
piece if rudd/roach deadbait/liver size 6 strong barbless/ Big landing net.
Someone I know uses strong coated braid stripped for last couple of inches for a compromise safer end rig where pike are in the water as pike will feed in the dark.
You could use this as a 2nd rod like people do for a carp sleeper.( I have caught carp on small deadbaits intended for perch and eels) Take a camera as the record is just over 11lb:)

If crucians are the main suspects, remember they can be caught by fining down and fishing a few inches above bottom.Try a small bread flake hovering above the fizzing if the rudd will permit. They will take bits that waft up from their digging. Good luck.

Do eels feed in winter too?

On the plus side, I had a nice 4 and a half pound tench finally!

Not much I fear. Usually a summer early Autumn exercise for me but there may be an eel specialist out there who could say for sure. You do get them on the tidal Trent occasionally in the colder months but I don't know about ponds.

On my lake the fizzing drove me to distraction one morning.

I eventually said to the fizzers " you want fizzing, well get some of this" and slung out a 2lb sea weight on a length of cord.....worked it fan wise all through the swim and brought up loads of huge bubbles and other grot.

Then I introduced a handful of bait and had lunch, 1/2 hr later the whole place was fizzing like a thousand airstones....a hundred times worse than previously.....:eek:mg:

One bite all afternoon, 4.9 Tench, they were still fizzing when I left

Answers on a postcard.

Some pellets do give off a slight fizz as they break down, but normally, it's real tiny bubbles, so small you can hardly see them.
