The great Moc Morgan is certainly right about the Rheidol: with the majority of its spawning headwaters denied to fish by the hydel scheme, the river without hatchery stocking is going to tank. Used to fish it - I once had a "leash" of sea-trout (3) one night - 7, 8 and 9 pounds. This in my early 20s in the 1970s. Far bigger fish have been taken since.

The Towy, a river in mostly good heart and with lower-river spawning tributaries - Gwili, Cothi etc - won't tank, however, so won't miss the closing hatcheries so much. Had my biggest British sea-trout from the Towy - 14.5 pounds. Many far bigger come from the river almost every season. Bit "busy" and pricey the Towy these days, so haven't fished it since the mid 1990s.
